CityFibre is one of the UK’s biggest alternative full fibre networks, rolling out ultrafast FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) broadband to over 4.5 million homes in the UK.
You don’t sign up with CityFibre directly. Instead, internet providers use its network to deliver gigabit broadband. That means no outdated copper lines and consistently high speeds.
- No landline needed
- Symmetrical speeds (great for uploads too)
- Used by popular ISPs like Vodafone, Sky Broadband, 4th Utility, toob and Zen.
Which broadband providers use the CityFibre network?
CityFibre partners with a wide range of internet service providers (ISPs). Some are well-known names, but there are others you might not have heard of yet.
Because CityFibre promises faster broadband connections than Openreach’s top one-gigabit option, many network providers have partnered with the ultrafast network.

CityFibre is expanding fast, with service-ready connections for over 4.5 million UK premises currently and a fibre rollout target of 8 million homes.
It’s also a partner of Project Gigabit - the UK government’s programme to provide reliable, fast fibre home broadband to hard-to-reach rural communities.
If your current contract is almost at over, we recommend checking your availability.
Where is CityFibre available?
It’s already live in parts of:
- Sheffield, Birmingham, Leeds, Brighton, Newcastle
- Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Bath, Plymouth
- Milton Keynes, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Cambridge
- And lots more regional towns and cities
Coverage is strongest in “second cities” and areas underserved by Openreach or Virgin Media.
How fast is CityFibre broadband?
The fastest major internet service provider using the CityFibre broadband network is now Sky Broadband.
It recently launched two gigabit services:
But even the entry-level plans beat most standard fibre optic (FTTC) speeds. This means these packages are great for 4K streaming, gaming, home working and large households.
What’s the difference between Openreach and CityFibre?
Three main differences are likely to influence your choice of fibre broadband service.
- CityFibre isn’t available in all areas of the UK. So while it is like Openreach in offering impressive broadband speeds, you might not be able to use it.
- CityFibre is more than twice as fast as Openreach's top download speed offering of 1Gb.
- And if you’re thinking long-term; CityFibre provides only full fibre (FTTP) connections. Openreach relies on both FTTP and FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet), so if you don’t need the faster speeds, you may be able to find a more affordable deal.
This means that Openreach’s availability is wider, but the speeds and choice it offers is more varied.
What’s the fastest broadband speed achievable on a CityFibre network?
| Feature | CityFibre | Openreach |
|---|---|---|
| Network Type | Full Fibre (FTTP) | Full Fibre (FTTP), Part Fibre (FTTC), ADSL |
| Max Download Speed | Up to 5Gb | Up to 900Mb |
| Upload Speeds | Symmetrical | Often much lower |
| Uses copper cabling? | No | Yes, in many areas |
| Availability | Growing | Nearly nationwide |
CityFibre is the clear winner for pure fibre speeds - but Openreach still leads on availability.
