Understanding full fibre broadband
What is full fibre broadband (FTTP)?
A full fibre service uses fibre optic cables to deliver ultrafast, reliable broadband all the way into your home.
This is why you may sometimes also see full fibre referred to as ‘FTTP’. This stands for ‘Fibre to the Premises’.
Full fibre gives you faster, more reliable internet than part-fibre or ADSL broadband.

Benefits of full fibre
- Speeds from 100Mb to over 1Gb
- Buffer-free streaming and fast downloads
- Symmetrical speeds (download and upload speeds are the same)
- Supports multiple devices with no slowdowns, even at peak times
- Best option for future proofing your home
- Often comes with better rewards for new customers
- No extra line rental costs
- Lower latency - better performance for online gamers

What speed do I need?
- 100Mb: Great for most families – streaming Netflix, video calls, working from home
- 300Mb+: Ideal for larger households or serious online gaming

Finding full fibre broadband in your area
Not every home can get a full fibre broadband service yet.
Use our postcode checker to instantly see if full fibre is available at your address:
If you see speeds over 100Mb listed, there’s a good chance you can get full fibre.
I can't get faster internet speeds. When will I get full fibre in my area?
The rollout of fibre broadband is ongoing. More homes are getting connected every day.
There are a couple of online checkers you can use to get updates on availability:
-
I live in a rural area. When will I get full fibre?
The UK government is working to improve fast, reliable broadband services to rural areas. ‘Project Gigabit’ aims to serve every home with download speeds up to 1Gb.
It’s currently pledging to achieve nationwide gigabit coverage to 99% of premises by 2032. But this date has been creeping upwards.
If you’re keen to get faster internet, but can’t sign up to a full fibre broadband service, you do have some options. These include:
- Mobile broadband (5G)
- Satellite broadband
- Fixed Wireless Access

-
Is Virgin Media full fibre?
Virgin’s network uses a mix of fibre and coaxial cable (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial – HFC). Most of its deals (apart from its limited Gig2 service) are not true FTTP, but still deliver high speeds. Just note that performance can dip over long distances.
Comparing full fibre broadband prices
Budget-friendly full fibre options
You don’t need to spend a fortune to get started. Entry-level full fibre broadband packages with average download speeds of 100Mb+ are often cheaper than older part-fibre broadband services.
Some providers may charge a small activation fee, but many include setup as part of the package.
Use our filters to sort by speed and price, or compare 100Mb+ full fibre deals directly.

Annual broadband price rises
Pay attention to the message ‘price may rise during contract’ on our listings. Unfortunately, many of the major providers raise their monthly costs every Spring.
The average annual price increase in 2026 will be an extra £4 per month.
If you’re keen to get more transparency in a deal, look for a provider that offers a 'fixed price promise'.

FAQs about full fibre broadband
-
Do I need a phone line for full fibre?
No. It uses fibre cables rather than a phone line made of copper cables, so there’s no line rental.
-
Will I need an engineer?
If you’ve never had full fibre before, this is likely. Engineers will install an external and internal box to connect your home.
-
Does full fibre work in rural areas?
An increasing number of rural areas can now sign up to a full fibre broadband service.
You may find you have more luck getting a faster broadband deal by signing up to a smaller, local provider (altnet).

-
Can I have a home phone with full fibre?
Most full fibre providers offer digital home phone calls as an optional extra. You won’t need access to a landline. Expect to pay around £10 per month for phone services, which will usually come with inclusive calls.
