How to cancel Virgin Media broadband or check your contract end date

What you need to know about cancelling Virgin Media broadband

Whether it’s constant outages, moving home or just wanting a cheaper deal, this guide walks you through how to cancel Virgin Media broadband, what happens at the end of your contract, and how to avoid surprise fees.

Check when your Virgin Media contract ends

Before you do anything, check whether you’re still in contract.

  • Virgin Media contracts are usually 24 months long
  • After this, your deal will switch to a rolling monthly contract
  • If you’re still within your minimum term, early cancellation fees may apply if you leave

How to find your end date

  • Log into your My Virgin Media account and view your contract summary
  • Check your latest Virgin Media bill or original paperwork
  • Contact Virgin Media customer services if you can’t find the date

Genie tip: If your contract is nearly up, it’s the perfect time to compare deals. Switching at the right time means no exit fees - and One Touch Switch makes it simple.

What happens at the end of your contract?

When you’re at the end of your minimum contract term:

  • Your broadband switches to a rolling monthly deal (your monthly fee may rise to a higher, out of contract price)
  • You can leave without early termination fees
  • Prices will continue to rise if you do nothing
  • Virgin may offer retention discounts or upgrades if you contact them

What to do before you cancel Virgin Media broadband

A bit of prep makes the process smoother.

  • Look for a new deal first – if you’re out of contract, switching is quick and your new provider usually handles it for you
  • Know your rights – Virgin sometimes waives exit fees if you’ve had persistent issues with your broadband service, so it’s worth asking
  • Check your contract end date – this helps you avoid unexpected fees

How to cancel Virgin Media broadband

If you simply need to cancel, but you’re not switching to a new provider:

  • Call Virgin Media on 0345 454 1111 (or 150 from a Virgin landline)
  • You can also use live chat or write to: Virgin Media, Sunderland, SR43 4AA.

The standard cancellation notice period is 30 days. Always ask for written confirmation of your cancellation date.

Cancelling if you’re still in contract

If you’re still in your minimum term, you may have to pay early termination charges.

  • Virgin usually charges either your full monthly fee or a percentage of it, multiplied by the months left.
  • The exact figure depends on your package and circumstances.
  • Fees might be reduced or waived if you’re moving somewhere Virgin doesn’t cover, or if speeds fall below Ofcom’s minimum.
  • The calculations for early termination fees are complicated. If you’re brave enough, you can use its ‘how to calculate my early disconnection fee’ form. But we recommend asking customer services for a full breakdown. For ease, you can do this using Live Chat.

Genie tip: Some providers, including Sky, Vodafone, BeFibre and brsk, offer to pay off some or all of your termination fees if you switch early. For more information, read our guide to switching credits.

Cancelling at the end of your contract

If your contract term has ended (or you’re within the 14-day cooling-off period), you can cancel Virgin Media for free.

Expect to be given some retention offers to tempt you to stay, but you’re free to switch.
