  • What's the cheapest way to get TV with your broadband?

One great way to keep your spend down but also get access to premium TV channels is to make use of NOW TV passes.

You may need a device such as a Google Chromecast or Amazon Fire TV Stick to stream. But these aren’t too expensive, and you can often get them second-hand.

Keeping your TV subscription separate means you may have more choices for broadband providers. You can still enjoy Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, or Sky Entertainment without a fixed contract.

Genie Tip:

Make sure you can afford to commit to a lengthy deal.

When you sign up to a bundle, you’re committing to all those services for the entire duration of your contract. It can be very different to downgrade, and cancelling early could amount to an expensive early termination fee.

More ways to save money on your broadband

Do I always have to switch broadband providers to get a cheaper deal?

It’s often the easiest way, but it doesn’t mean it’s the only way.

Thanks to mid-contract price rises and the fact that your monthly price will typically rise once your minimum term is over, it's easily to end up paying more than you should.

We know switching broadband isn’t always an ideal solution. You may have limited options in your area or be keen to keep perks or TV services.

But we still encourage you to do your research.

You’re unlikely to get a discount unless you can point out specific deals and better offers.

Tips for getting cheap home broadband deals: how to haggle

  1. Contact customer service and ask to speak to the retentions or cancellations department

  2. Explain you’ve found better deals elsewhere and can they give you a better deal if you renew your contract

  3. Use your research and give specific examples

  4. Don’t feel like you have to accept the first offer. If it’s not within budget, let them know you’re still considering switching

  5. Feel free to follow up if you need time to think. You may get a follow-up offer by email or text

Genie Tip: Look out for the 'Genie Exclusive' label in your results. These are the best deals for that package. You won't find cheaper elsewhere!

Switching to a smaller provider (altnet)

There are lots more providers than just the big names. In fact, there are more smaller providers than ever.

We call them ‘Altnets’ because they operate on alternative networks to big brands like BT, Sky, or Vodafone.

You can often get really great broadband offers with an altnet provider. Many give you quick speeds at lower prices. They also offer perks like fixed price promises, which means no annual price hikes.

Some examples of altnet providers you could switch to on Broadband Genie include:

But we change offers daily and availability will depend on your address.

Wondering whether to move to a smaller provider? Here are some pros and cons that may help you decide:

The advantages and disadvantages of looking for a cheaper deal with an altnet
Pros Cons
  • Many altnets offer faster speeds for less money
  • Upload speeds may be as fast as downloads (symmetrical speeds)
  • Altnets are more likely to offer fixed prices (no mid-contract price hikes)
  • More personal customer service standards
  • May include a higher initial set-up fee
  • Limited availability
  • May involve costly and messy installation

Getting cheap broadband deals on benefits: social tariffs

If you’re currently receiving benefits such as:

  • Universal Credit
  • Job Seeker’s Allowance
  • House benefit
  • Disability allowance
  • Personal Independence Payment

You may qualify for a broadband social tariff. These are discounted broadband services.

Not all broadband providers openly advertise social tariffs.

Ofcom has a full list of social tariffs available to various regions around the UK.

You can also find more information in our guide to getting broadband on benefits.

Quick tips for getting the best value broadband

  • Set a reminder in your calendar around six weeks before your current contract ends
  • Look for providers that offer switching credits. These could give you a way to get out of your contract early (they'll pay any early exit fees)
  • Filter deals by effective monthly cost
  • Avoid add-ons you don’t need
  • Check price rises information. Look for fixed price deals for best transparency over costs.

Our deals are sorted by how popular they are with our visitors. The more people clicking on a deal - especially if they then buy it - the higher it is in our tables.

Sponsored deals are not factored in when sorting by popularity.

Pricing Calculation

Effective monthly cost = This shows how much you are effectively paying each month over the length of the contract by taking into account rewards savings and one-off fees. The calculation for this is monthly cost x length of contract + setup cost - rewards savings.

Monthly cost = What you'll pay each month. This does not include additional fees, such as phone calls, which may be added to your bill.

Setup cost = The cost of installation, postage for the Wi-Fi router, and any other one-off charges.

Total Price Rise Costs = This is the additional amount paid over the course of the contract based on any annual price rises by the provider.

Rewards saving = The value of vouchers and other perks included with a deal such as cashback, bill credit or a gift card which you can claim.

What does this mean?

The speedometer gives you a quick idea of how fast a deal is. Speeds are shown in average download speed (Mb/Gb) – here’s what each level means:

💡 Tip: You don’t always need the highest speed, but it can help make things smoother and future-proof your home.

What is a trending deal?

A trending deal is a package that has increased in popularity in recent days. We base this on the number of people clicking on, and buying the deal.
