Hybrid broadband (also known as ‘unbreakable broadband’ or ‘unbreakable Wi-Fi’) is a fibre broadband connection with a 4G network signal as a back-up. If your main broadband connection goes down, a mobile connection automatically kicks in to keep you online.
It’s designed to minimise disruption – ideal if you work from home or rely heavily on your internet connection.
Currently, only BT and Vodafone offer dedicated hybrid broadband packages in the UK.

BT Hybrid Connect is a 4G add-on you can bolt onto most BT Fibre and Full Fibre packages (except Fibre Essentials). The mobile back-up uses EE’s network.

What happens during a dropout?
- Takes 2–3 minutes to switch to 4G
- You’ll stay on 4G for at least 15 minutes before your router checks if the fibre connection is back.
- Max 4G speeds: Up to 30Mb download / 5Mb upload (often lower)
BT includes unlimited mobile data while you're using the Hybrid Connect back-up.

How BT Hybrid Connect works
Things to be aware of:
- Your speeds will drop: When you’re on the EE mobile network, you’ll only be able to achieve maximum download speeds of ‘up to 30Mb’ and upload speeds of 5Mb. If your signal is poor or the mobile network is busy, this might be less.
- Your TV Bundles will be affected: Subscription channels may not work via a set-top box while on mobile back-up.
- Your router might not be compatible: BT Hybrid Connect only works with the BT Smart Hub 2. You won’t be able to get this working alongside a third-party router.
Vodafone Pro: Vodafone’s hybrid broadband option
Vodafone’s version of hybrid broadband is Vodafone Pro – a full package with built-in 4G connection back-up and Wi-Fi boosters.

- Prices from: £38 per month
- Includes: 100GB 4G back-up, Wi-Fi boosters, automatic switch-over
Unlike BT, Vodafone’s mobile back-up has a 100GB monthly cap, but that should be plenty if used as intended.
Wi-Fi coverage is guaranteed with up to three boosters. If it still doesn't work well enough, you can leave without penalty.
