Key things to know when moving Sky broadband
|
|---|
Transferring your current Sky contract when you change address
If you’re happy to keep your current Sky Broadband service, whether you’re in or out of contract, moving home should be simple.
Before you do anything, make sure you can still get Sky Broadband at your new address.
Start your home move by logging into MySky at sky.com/moving-home
Here you can:
- confirm your moving date
- double check Sky availability at your property
- arrange activation or an engineer if required
Tip: Sky 'Superfast' is widely available to most UK homes, but full fibre may not be. Be prepared to downgrade or switch providers.
-
What is Openreach?
Openreach maintains the broadband network used by Sky, BT and most major UK providers.
If you need an installation or repair, an Openreach network engineer will usually visit your home.
Virgin Media and other smaller broadband providers (altnets) don’t use this network, as it runs on its own cable system.
Making changes to your Sky Broadband contract when moving home
Upgrading your Sky Broadband service
If there’s no change to your existing package, it will carry on as normal, and you’ll be able to keep your contract end date.
If your new home has access to full fibre, you can upgrade to faster speeds.
To make changes, contact Sky by:
Messaging a Sky Expert (9am–7.30pm)
Calling 0333 759 2919
Upgrading usually triggers a new 24-month contract.

Downgrading your package
You can remove add-ons or switch to a slower tier, but this may restart your contract. Always check with Sky before making changes.
What happens if Sky isn’t available at your new address
If your Sky package can’t be transferred, you may only be offered a downgrade to Superfast. This can be disappointing if you’re currently enjoying a full fibre service.
If you’re unhappy with this, the only way out may be to accept you’ll have to pay an early termination fee.
Unfortunately, this could work out expensive.
We always recommend getting in touch and talking through your options with a Sky Expert.
Switching providers
An alternative may be to switch provider. For example, Virgin Media or smaller broadband providers (alternative network providers) are often available in areas where Openreach full fibre is limited.
Try our postcode checker to compare options. Some providers offer switching credits to help pay off some early termination fees. This can be a good option if you only have a few months left on your Sky contract.
Leaving Sky if you’re out of contract
Moving home is the perfect time to refresh your broadband. If you’re out of contract, you are probably paying more than you need to.
Check broadband deals at your new address and see if there’s a faster or cheaper option. Switching is simple, and your new provider will usually handle the entire process.

Leaving Sky when you’re still in contract
If you leave Sky when you’re still under contract, it’s likely you’ll have to pay an early termination fee.
The amount you’re charged will depend on:
- how long’s left of your minimum contract term
- the days you’ve already been billed for in advance
- the products you're subscribed to, the price you pay for them, and when your subscription ends
To find out what you’ll be charged, you can find more information on early termination charges on the Sky website.
