I have never stressed up with anything I have been promised and paying for like talk talk.Since started with them it's problem after problem and no solution and am getting frustrated by their service.Since moving house getting into 2 months without TV and Internet not working. I wish if I had checked on the reviews before I accepted their false offers.I call almost everyday for 2 hours on the phone and nothing has been done.Their box cannot make sense out of it and has not been able to watch anything coz no Internet connection or the other thing. quite simple really, moved out of an address in Devizes to an new address where talk talk who I had for 2 years with no concerns, on 30112018, paid the owed amount and was told that as no further service could be provided they would waive my close down charges, since then have been e mailed threats of none payment, charges occurring etc, tried chatline, talking to robots e mails, no avail

I have been with Talk Talk for many years, however I have seen steady decline in service quality and customer service. Long story short, I'm getting an inconsistent internet connection, reported this well over six weeks ago (over 28 days), which would entitle me to cancel contract free of charge, however, Talk Talk operators have documented that my initial complaint was resolved. They are now stating that I need to give them another 28 days to resolve the issue. This means that the operator/s have been putting down false information. I have 12 months left with this service provider, if I don't get out of contract earlier. PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP WITH TALK TALK. Their data security is also very poor hence continuously being contacted by scammers...they are now charging you for call barring from no id callers, This used to be free to help counter scammers. Next time I will go for a company with a UK only based call centre and high rates of customer satisfaction. STAY AWAY FROM TALK TALK, THEY ARE NOT WHAT THEY USED TO BE!

Very poor wifi and abysmal customer service i have refused to pay my bill as the reliability is ridiculous i failed 2 exams because of not having a reliable connection so was unable to revise for the exams complaint has been lodged however only got 95p compensation and finally no further compensation also very rude customer service team have now escalated this to Cisas, trading standards and ofcom

Where do I start..? WiFi disconnects during the day and every evening from 9-10pm till 3am latest! Yes every night! Having to “online chat” to so called “customer service” due to telephone calls not resolving the issue or miss lead communication frustrates you enough only to be told several times it’s due to technical issues yet they say they can see “great” WiFi connection. How on earth does that make sense when your red WiFi light is on indicating no WiFi is beyond me! Customer service team have no customer service skills at all! They don’t know their head from there back side! Simple! Talk talk raves about “Loyal customers GUARANTEED prices! Oh my god, do not be fooled by this via verbal or written communication this is not true and should be stopped! My bill has veried from... £18 to £19 to £41 yes £41 to now £26. NO EXPLANATION so it has now promted me after OVER 4 years of being with this bad company leading to believe I was a so called loyal customer to end all ties with this company! I know it’ll be the best decision to move to a better provider at a lower cost however I genuinely feel for other people who wish to opt in to this company but do so at your own risk! Bad WiFi, penny pinchers, no customer service support, unrealistic and misleading to get you to join their contracted scam!

TalkTalk is very fraudulent company and NEVER make the mistake of joining as they will provide no service and will charge you and they will make it nearly impossible to get a refund. I made the mistake of accepting to change and they did NOTHING! Within 2 weeks I was charged £59.89 and despite calling and spending hours and being tossed around for over a month, I have received NO REFUND! They are FRAUDSTERS and PLEASE!!! NEVER MAKE THE MISTAKE! FLEE FROM TALK TALK!!

Started a 12 month contract 4 months ago

We started with 3 weeks of no internet due to a "fault in the line"
They sent out an engineer who confirmed the line was fine and they have not sorted the signal on their end ... he also mentioned we seem to have a faulty router but he knew talk talk would not want to send out a new one as it will cost them.
We finally had Internet but after 9pm the speed would go down from 6mps to below 1mps which is much low that our promised minimum of 6-21 mps
The router would need reset daily and sometimes multiple times a day.
We had 3 occasions when the Internet was completely not working for 5-21 days
Custom.er service calls were extremely long and frustrating running all the checks which took 2 hours every phone call even when it's the same day just to finalise the engineer booking or new router to be sent out.
Finally when we ask for compensation for having no internet and bad service 3 times for up to 5 weeks in a 4 month period ... the manager says they will refund 3 pounds for the five days that we didn't have internet.
I've never seen a respected company that treats it's customers this bad.
There are some smaller companies with much better customer care and service

Broadband compensation

Get automatic compensation when your broadband goes down

You could be in line for compensation next time your internet goes down, following an agreement involving some of the UK's biggest broadband providers.

A voluntary code introduced by industry regulator Ofcom states that, from early next year, providers will have to reimburse customers if they lose broadband or landline phone service.

So far, BT, Sky, Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Zen Internet have signed up to the agreement. Plusnet and EE have also indicated that they may join.

What you'll get

Under the plan, customers will receive £8 per day in compensation when their broadband goes down and the fault takes longer than two days to fix.

In addition, there will be £25 compensation when an engineer misses a scheduled appointment, or cancels within 24 hours.

Plus, customers will receive £5 per day when new services they sign up for do not start on time.

Homes, and small and medium businesses are eligible.

There are some caveats. You won't get compensation if you're the cause of the problem, like if you damage the wiring in your home or are out when the engineer arrives. Most faults are also likely to be fixed inside two days, so you could still experience disruption without being compensated for it.

Openreach are also involved in the scheme, since most faults occur on their network (apart from Virgin Media, who use their own infrastructure). They have said that they won't compensate the broadband suppliers in the event of force majeure events like flooding, leaving the onus on the suppliers themselves to foot the bill in those instances.

After a consultation in Spring 2017, Ofcom published their judgement in November 2017, giving retail and wholesale providers a 15 month deadline by which automatic compensation had to be in place. This means that the very latest we can expect to see the system working is mid-February 2019.

Your consumer rights

The agreement is the latest in a line of measures designed to the experience of broadband users, and ensure we're all getting value for money.

You can already exit your deal early and without penalty in the event of mid-contract price rises, or if the service you're receiving is simply not up to scratch. And the process to switch broadband is also now much simpler than it used to be.

As we spend more and more of our lives online - managing our money and doing our shopping - we're more likely to encounter problems. Viruses, scams and other cyber-crimes are continuing to become more common. So what's the best way to stay safe online? Let's take a look.

1. Install anti-virus software

Anti-virus software is a must if you use Windows (less so for Macs, Chromebooks, phone and tablets). It doesn't just protect you against viruses you can get though email attachments or dodgy downloads; it protects against all malware - any software designed with malicious intent. This includes nasties like spyware that steals your passwords, and ransomware, which locks down your computer unless you pay up.

Free anti-virus software from your broadband provider

A lot of the best broadband providers give you a free, or cheap, anti-virus subscription as part of their deal. If yours is on this list, make sure you take them up on the offer:

  • BT: with BT you get the McAfee powered BT virus Protect. You can install it on two or up to 15 machines, depending on your package. You also get Web Protect, which checks websites you visit are safe, and True Key, a secure password manager you can install on five devices.
  • EE: EE Home Broadband gives you a year's subscription to Norton Security Premium for up to 10 devices. After that it costs £39.99 a year, half the normal price.
  • Plusnet: Plusnet Protect, from McAfee, is free for Unlimited and Unlimited Fibre Extra customers. On the standard Unlimited Fibre deal you'll need to pay an extra £2 a month for your virus protection. You can install it on up to seven PCs.
  • Sky Broadband: on one of Sky's Unlimited deals you get a 12 month free trial of the McAfee Internet Security suite for up to three PCs. On the limited packages you get three months. Once the trial is up you can keep it going for £3 extra a month.
  • TalkTalk: with TalkTalk you get HomeSafe, an award winning online security package. This combines some virus protection and parental controls. It isn't a full anti-virus tool, though.
  • Virgin Media: Virgin Media Security is worth £39.95 a year, but is free to all Virgin Media broadband customers. It gives you full anti-virus coverage for up to three PCs.
  • Vodafone: with Vodafone you get a free six month sub to F Secure SAFE anti-virus package for up to five devices. After that, you can subscribe for £39.99 a year - half the normal price.
  • NOW Broadband: with NOW you get the Broadband Buddy service. This helps to protect you against malware-infected sites, but isn't a full anti-virus package.
  • John Lewis Broadband: John Lewis offers a full subscription to the Bullguard security package for Windows users.

If your supplier isn't on the list, there's loads of free anti-virus tools you can get instead. Bitdefender and Avast are among the most highly rated.

Malware isn't just a concern for those who browse the murkier reaches of the internet. Perfectly benign, mainstream websites can become compromised, and even ads can be crafted to try and do bad things without you even needing to click on them.

2. Keep your software updated

It's so tempting to turn off automatic software updates. They always pop up at the worst possible time, and if it happens to be a Windows update you can write off the next half hour waiting for it to finish.

Except, software updates are really important. Especially the Windows ones.

They don't just bring new features or improved performance, they make your computer more secure. Bugs in software can create the kind of security risks that malware thrives upon. Not only do they allow the malware into your system, they can also enable it to spread from one machine to another.

Updates shut down these vulnerabilities. At the very least, don't turn off updates to Windows or your web browser, such as Google Chrome. Better still, allow all your apps to update as they need to.

3. Learn how to recognise online scams

Malware is designed to exploit weaknesses in computer systems, but the truth is the weakest points of all are us, the users. You can lock down your laptop but it won't stop someone trying to trick you into handing over your passwords.

Phishing scams, as they're called, have moved on a lot since the days of the Nigerian prince who wanted to send you tens of millions of dollars. They're now a whole lot more sophisticated and difficult to spot. And it isn't just online that you need to be wary. You might get a text message purporting to be from your mobile network, or you could get a scam call from your broadband provider.

So, how do you spot scams? Here's a few tips:

  • Spelling and grammar mistakes in emails are a dead giveaway. Also, does the email greet you by name or a generic title?
  • Beware of emails demanding urgent action. Scammers try to scare you into responding, like telling you there's been a security alert on your account, or you're overdrawn, and you must log in to fix it.
  • Be wary of links in emails. Don't assume that the link is going to take you where you think it will.
  • Or just don't click links at all. Instead of clicking a link to one of your online services, manually type their address into your browser instead. Or pick up the phone and give them a call.
  • If it sounds suspicious, it probably is. If you didn't buy a lottery ticket, you didn't win the lottery.
  • Don't assume a fancy website means that a site is reputable. This is a rule to follow when shopping online, too.

Anti-virus software and web browsers will help you to sniff out phishing scams. What better reason to keep them up to date?

4. Use better passwords

We all know the importance of using strong passwords and not re-using them. But it can be difficult, since strong passwords are so much harder to remember. There are three things to try to make your life easier:

  1. Think in terms of passphrases instead of passwords. A sentence of eight random words is easier to remember - and type - than a password of eight random characters, but it's just as hard to crack.
  2. Consider using a password manager. Don't save your passwords in your web browser, use a dedicated password manager instead. This saves all your logins under a single, more secure password. With BT Broadband, the True Key offers exactly this feature and is worth trying out. Alternatively, take a look at LastPass or 1Password, both of which are free.
  3. Use two factor authentication. A large and growing number of services offer two factor authentication. When you log in you need to enter both your password and a second, unique code sent to your phone via an app or text message. It's a lot more secure.

5. Keep an eye on your privacy

Finally, keep an eye on how much information you're sharing online. If you use social networks you're probably sharing a lot more than you realise. Check the Privacy section in Facebook and other services to lock them down, and make sure your kids do this, too.

And speaking of kids, most broadband providers offer some form of parental controls that you can use to manage what people can see, or how long they can go online. These are worth setting up, but remember that they are by no means foolproof.

Can I get TalkTalk?

TalkTalk's low cost network area is the largest in Britain, meaning that most households in urban and central areas are able to sign up for their standard phoneline broadband, and more rural and remote homes are covered than by any other local loop unbundling (LLU) provider.

Limitations also apply to customers wanting to get fibre broadband with TalkTalk, as TalkTalk use the Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) technology provided by Openreach. This is still in the process of being rolled out nationwide, around 90% of the population currently overed and 95% coverage expected by the end of 2017. TalkTalk will only sell their Fibre products to customers who are also within the low cost network area or whose exchange will be added within the next 4 months, however there is very significant overlap between fibre and LLU areas, meaning only a small percentage of FTTC homes will be unable to sign up for TalkTalk Fibre.

What types of broadband are available?

TalkTalk offer three versions of their standard and fibre broadband packages, each with a fixed price with line rental included.

The standard broadband deals are:

  • Fast Broadband - totally unlimited standard broadband with speeds averaging 11Mb, on an 18 month contract.
  • TV with Fast Broadband - Fast Broadband plus a TalkTalk TV box with 75 Freeview channels and the ability to pause and rewind live TV
  • TV Plus with Fast Broadband - Fast Broadband plus a TalkTalk TV Plus box that can pause, rewind and record 185 hours of TV. It also includes access to 80+ Freeview channels, 30 extra Entertainment channels including Sky 1, and a range of on-demand services including BBC iPlayer

The fibre broadband packages are:

  • Faster Fibre Broadband - totally unlimited fibre broadband with speeds averaging 35Mb, on an 18 month contract.
  • TV with Faster Fibre - Faster Fibre Broadband plus a TalkTalk TV box with 80+ Freeview channels and the ability to pause and rewind live TV
  • TV Plus with Faster Fibre - Faster Fibre Broadband plus a TalkTalk TV Plus box that can pause, rewind and record 185 hours of TV. It includes access to 80+ Freeview channels, 30 premium Entertainment channels, and a range of on-demand services

You can purchase an optional Broadband Boost for an extra £5 per month to upgrade to speeds averagung 63Mb. This option might not be available in all areas, and as always the actual speeds you achieve may be somewhat slower than the advertised maximum.

The TV packages come with the option to add extra channels, such as Sky Sports or Sky Cinema, on a 30 day rolling contract, so you can cancel at any time. There are also optional landline call plans available for all of the packages.

Which package should I choose?

TalkTalk's packages have the same terms, so your choice comes down to what speed you need.

Smaller households, or those with less demanding requirements, may find that the Fast Broadband packages offer sufficient speeds. If you use the internet mostly for browsing, email and social networking, and maybe one user watching Netflix or iPlayer, then the 11Mb average speed offering could be fast enough. However, speeds are affected by several factors including how far your home is from your nearest telephone exchange. Make sure you base your decision on the real world speed estimate TalkTalk provides you.

For larger households, or those that want to use the internet for constant streaming, gaming or downloading, a fibre plan is likely to be more suitable. If the 35Mb average speed still doesn't seem like enough, TalkTalk offers the option to upgrade to a service with 63Mb average speed if it's available in your area.

Other factors to consider are whether you want to add TV services to your plan. Your options here are for the basic Freeview channels with a box that enables you to pause and rewind shows, or for a premium package with the ability to record shows as well as access on-demand services. In both cases there's also the option to add premium channels without long-term commitment. Your subscriptions renew every month and you can cancel whenever you want.

Points to consider before you choose

  • How far do you live from your local BT telephone exchange, and will this greatly impact your ADSL speeds?
  • How many people will be using your broadband connection at any one time, especially for heavy downloading or online gaming?
  • Would an 18 month contract be too long for you?
  • Do you watch a lot of TV, or make a lot of phone calls?
  • Do you want to be able to record programmes with your telly box?
  • Is your connection fast enough (2Mb or more) to support streamed TV?

What do I get when I sign-up?

What are the benefits of TalkTalk?

The benefits offered by an ISP may be what seals the deal in your decision to buy a package from them.

What are the drawbacks of TalkTalk?

Let's face it, not everything can be perfect, and even the best deals may have a downside.

  • Contract lengths - TalkTalk do not offer contracts of less than 12 months, meaning they are not ideal for those who have shorter tenancy agreements and also requiring a greater level of commitment. Those looking for more flexibility are better looking elsewhere. However, the long contracts can be a plus to those who live in one place and want to lock in their low broadband price for an 18 month period.
  • Limited to LLU areas - Unless your exchange is among those in which TalkTalk have installed their own equipment, you'll be unable to sign up for the service. This mainly affects customers in rural and remote areas. TalkTalk has the largest LLU network.
  • High complaint levels - The communications regulator Ofcom keeps track of the customer complaint levels of for broadband and TV services. The complaint level figures for mid 2016 show that TalkTalk is joint-third most complained about broadband provider, with complaint levels well above the industry average. Although BT and Plusnet both have higher levels.
