Know your BT cancellation rights

BT requires 30 days’ notice to cancel.

  • If you’re cancelling but not switching to another service, you’ll need to contact BT on 0800 783 1401. Have your account number ready.
  • If you’re out of contract, your service stops 30 days after you cancel, and you’ll get a notice of your final payment.
  • If you’re still in contract, an early termination fee applies.
  • Example of BT cancellation fee

E.g You pay £35 a month, and you have four months left in your minimum term.

BT multiples £35 by four months, totalling £140.

VAT is deducted, reducing it to £116.67.

BT takes off the cost it saves, for example, £15 per month, multiplied by 4 = £60, leaving £56.67.

1% is discounted for early receipt, making £56.10.

VAT is added, making your final early termination fee £67.32.

Leaving BT broadband with no charge

There may be times when you’re exempt from early termination charges. These include:

Cancellation with your cooling-off period. You can cancel within 14 days of ordering using an online form.

Cancelling because of a bereavement. BT offers a dedicated support line if you need to report the death of an account holder. Call the team on 0800 169 1663, or use the online bereavement form. You may be given the option to transfer the service to someone else.

Moving out of a BT service area. Most homes in the UK have access to a BT service so you can transfer your contract to your new address. If you’re moving into an area not served by BT Openreach, you may be able to cancel for free.

You’re not getting the speeds you signed up for. BT is signed up to Ofcom’s voluntary code of practice for Better Broadband Speeds. You may be able to leave without an exit fee if your broadband connection falls below your minimum speed guarantee.

Return or Recycle BT Equipment

When you cancel your BT service you’ll need to return any devices you have such as your Wi-Fi router, Wi-Fi boosters or TV Box.

Here’s an example of current charges for non-returned equipment:

BT charges for non-returned equipment
Type of equipment Charge
Home Hub, Smart Hub £65
Smart Hub 2 £65
BT TV Box (Z4) £60
Hybrid Connect £75
Complete Wi-Fi discs £50 per device

Switch with One-Touch Switch

Out of contract but looking for a better deal? There’s no need to get in touch with BT to cancel when switching.

Thanks to One-Touch Switch, all you need to do is find a new broadband provider and package you’re happy with and complete the checkout to sign up. It shouldn’t matter who you’re switching to, even if you’re moving to a different network (such as Virgin Media).

Your new provider will then notify BT you’re leaving and make all the arrangements.

Keep a look out for the confirmed switch date and notifications from both providers that the switch is going as planned.

Yes – even with One Touch Switch, BT usually requires a 30-day notice period.
