I have been with TalkTalk since they took over Tiscali.
Where I appreciate that many here have bona fide grievances, complaining, by its very nature will carry much personal desire from each individual.
When I award stars I first look at the environment the company is operating in, and next to much of Europe we are woefully behind them with our internet services.
TalkTalk can offer me "pie-in-the-sky" speeds but I know they will be from 0 - 5mb, often around 500kb/s in my area (Cornwall) . . .why ? because it isn't worth digging up all the ground between me and the main road.
However, I believe a new "piggyback" method is coming using the existing lines.
When you see download speeds ask what is the real speed, because they are always a lot slower than what any company wants you to believe.
In any business there will be some "sharp" practices which annoy many but TalkTalk seeks to be a cutprice operation in a very infrastructure primitive UK internet market so I judge their performance on that.
Any lightening strike will kill a TalkTalk router. The tiresome check routine on the telephone help line must be endured, an engineer comes and supplies a new router each time for free . .that must qualify as good customer relations ?
If I was running a SUCCESSFUL business I wouldn't use TalkTalk, so any complaints here about bad service is down to trying to go cheapskate.
I do a lot of downloading and for the private individual all that is required is a modicum of patience (which doesn't fit into the ethos of the modern world).
So, measured against the overall state of the internet in the UK I give TalkTalk a fair rating with the stars.

Talktalk service is extremely bad. They have cancelled my service by mistake and did not give any compensation and every time I call, I'm always directed to an Indian call centre where no body knows what they're doing. I am an extremely unsatisfied customer and I tell them that on the phone, they tried to help by giving 3 months free line rental and they always say "they've addded that to the 'notes' section of my account. However, every time I call and speak to a new phone operator, they couldn't find the notes! Therefore I always have to explain everything over and over again! I have had enough of their crappy service and decided to cancel it, they want to charge me £58 cancellation charge! THE ONLY WAY TALKTALK MAKES MONEY IS BY PROVIDING CRAPPY SERVICE AND FORCING THEIR CUSTOMERS TO CANCEL AND EARN FROM CANCELLATION CHARGES! Moreover, they never give you your refund! I have been on the phone with RENZ VALENTOS and he has promised me that my refund will be issued within 10 working days, however, it has been a month and I still haven't received my refund! This company is a total scam! Don't deal with them if you want to get screwed over and over, spending time with their Indian call centre repeatedly with 2 hours per call and be passed around from operator to operator explaining everything over and over again!

WARNING ABOUT TALK TALK ENGINEERS & BT
It costs £65 to have an engineer visit your house. TALK TALK's Broadband seems naturally to be slow! So they suggest sending an Engineer, which I did not want.
If they send their own engineer and he finds nothing they don't charge you because presumably it does not cost them much. They sent one out to me and he found no fault at my property.
HOWEVER IF THEY SEND A BT ENGINEER it may well be a very different story.
On the website it says if the fault is outside your property they wont charge you. Just be wary.
I was told by the Talk Talk engineer there was not problem in my property, a few months later a BT Engineer was sent. He replaced the old socket with a new one announcing it would cost nothing as there was nothing wrong with the old socket except it was outdated.
He said I need NOT replace the socket but that for future testing it would be a good idea. I confirmed with him I would not be charged. He replied upgrading was standard and free of charge.
However he must have gone back to TALK TALK and charged them so they charged me. There was no fault at my property and I wish I had recorded what he said or taken video on my phone. Its not enough anymore to take note of someones name or what they have said. On the BT report submitted by the engineer he stated the fault was at my property. As I said I wish I had recorded with his consent the conversation. I now have a £65 bill!
My arguement is if I had known no matter what I would have to pay £65 I simply would have paid £65 to leave TALK TALK and get a better service elsewhere with no need for an engineer.
My advice record an Engineer either by video or voice and know if a BT Engineer is sent to your house regardless you are going to have to pay for that.
I spent months saying I did not want an engineer and this is why. The internet service is a bit better but still very slow and the signal still drops.
I'm going to be glad to leave TALK TALK, I only wish I could warn more people. Im thinking about contacting WatchDog.

First when I bought talktalk it seemed ok but after a year of time with them it seemed like they were disconnecting us from the internet because they always kept saying are setting have been changed which obviously ment they were changing the setting. Then after several calls they told us they are going to send an engineer... when the engineer checked everything he said there is no fault so they made us pay £60 for the engineer and the was still appearing... DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER BUYING TALKTALK!!!!

Cuts out too often to even be on the internet. Customer support 'fixed' and 'upgraded' our service when in fact it made it worse. Router supplied is pants without any features and is too locked down and buggy to use. Would not even think about using this ISP again in the future. Waiting for the contract to run out so we can upgrade to BT or EE

As a long standing customer of Virgin I'm now being forced over to Talk Talk as Virgin exit the ADSL market.
I suspected that the move had taken place when the speed and bandwidth totally collapsed literally overnight. I now recall the horror of dial-up speeds! Using a speed checker reveals a download speed of <0.5MBS during evenings and weekends - I'm getting up at 6am to do larger downloads (e.g. update Firefox, not films). Both the speed checker and a call to Virgin confirmed that my migration onto the Talk Talk servers had occurred.
Suffice to say I'm off, no way is this speed acceptable especially when Virgin did so much better on the same infrastructure.
I have not called Talk Talk as at this stage the MAC can be provided by Virgin so I have no experience of the Talk Talk service experience but feedback from others doesn't bode well.

Forced onto Talk Talk by Virgin giving up on non-cable customers. The connection is so slow it times out on the broadband speed testers. Cannot wait to transfer to someone else.

I moved from Talk Talk ADSL to fibre and what a joke, I have had t a week and spent more time without service than with, though when I do have it it's really fast and good. I have been with them for years without a problem and so going up to fibre was a step up so I thought, I am now waiting for someone t come and look at it for me to "fix" it, though I was told if it was my fault I would have to pay £65 for the service! I wouldn't recommend anyone to go to them after the problems I have had this week with customer service being useless and so unhelpful it is untrue, try sky or BT if getting a new internet provider and not Talk Talk! Be warned

Very poor slow download speed. Three people in our road have transferred away from Talktalk to BT and their broadband speed has improved enormously, but mine has diminished accordingly. It seems that Talktalk are not given enough bandwidth by BT to supply the needs of their customers.

Awful, awful and just awful.... After being with them for over 8 years, I called to ask for replacement router as the one i have and have had since start has clearly life expired - yet they go on and on soo much about issues that aint there and then offer to send an engineer out costing £69!!!! I only wanted a new router to help stop my internet going instead of having to reset the router twice a day and at a speed of 0.49mb... i didnt want over an hour or silly questions and then they ask £69 for someone to visit! Services terminated and gooodbye! Never will use them again.

Minus points-sales people make promises that Talk Talk refuse to honour. It's the usual resolution - if you don't like it then pay your contract and leave.
You have to have a three way conversation. They won't put you through to who you know will be the best person to speak to.
They repeat that they understand your frustrations after everything you say
Plus points-offer alternatives although they do not resolve the issue.
You can get through by phone.
I will pay up and leave. I should have read the reviews and listened to friends and family.

This is the worst service I have ever had. On initial setup it was fjne, got good network speed. A month later my speed dropped from 39mbps to only 12mbps, the internet kept dropping out too. I called talk talk to get this fixed so they sent out an engineer who told me there was no issues and said it was fixed. I called up a further 8 times since. Another month later the problem was still not fixed so I called up again and this time they said I can terminate my contract free of charge. Since leaving 2 months later talk talk are still trying to charge me fees of £425 for terminating the contract even when they said I don't need to pay! This is starting to turn out to be a scam, never trust them and never join!

After over 3 years of hassle and bad service, and after giving TalkTalk numerous opportunities to sort out their bad service, I terminated my account 7 weeks ago. Since then I've been inundated with phone calls, emails etc stating that I have to pay them £214 for having cancelled the contract early.... A contract that I did not agree to and was not aware of!! Over the 3 years I've suffered at the hands of Talktalk I've had umpteen engineer visits, wasted hours and hours of my precious time, had dozens of phone calls and email exchanges and wasted over £1500 after being told the problems were due to my PC, Laptop or smart TV.... All three of which were replaced at my expense only to find that the broadband issues were STILL there!
Talktalk are now hassling me on a DAILY basis. I have told them not to ring me, and to email or send letters, but STILL they keep ringing and making threats! This has caused me so much stress and I am at the end of my tether. I will not be paying them £214 for terminating a contract that I was not aware I had entered into, and in my opinion, they have breached their own contract for not providing a service that I was paying for! I am furious!! They even rang me TWICE today....Easter Sunday!!

I joined talk talk 2 months ago. Then I got a message saying there will be changes to the international booster rates added on my account. Firstly, I joined them because I could use the international booster they provide to make calls to family in Nigeria. When I joined, I was told the cost will not change as long as I had a contract. Please don't join this company, they cannot be trusted. They are only after your money

In the centre of a city where we are paying extra for ultra fast broadband with fibre optics the internet connection is worse than our previous house in the middle of the country. Quite often I have been unable to lead a YouTube video or a google search and watching a film over the internet is just a nightmare. I am constantly frustrated with the inability for it not working. I THOROUGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT CHOOSE THIS PROVIDER.

I've never had such poor broadband. Constantly dropping out, speeds when it does work are slow and their response was to send out a new and improved router...... which has actually made things worse!
I was attracted to TalkTalk by the cheap prices, but I should have stuck to the more expensive one I was with before that worked well.

I had a problem with broadband for 17 days today while phone was working. Spoke to talktalk customer service 3 times, every single time they assured me of working in 24 hours, which was a lie. Fourth time, reported problem told me to do same thing which I did before, and finally I had to convince them to send engineers with a charge of £65. Stuck.... Helpless..... Frustrated unhappy customer. It's cheap than others but worst customer service. Not recommended to others.

its my biggest mistake to sign the contract with this parasite firm. Charged me for £65 and additional 38 pounds for missing appointment even though the engineer visited the property. Although filed the complaints but not heard a word back, instead they took the money off.
Definnately this is one of the scam firm that I ever come across.

Terrible terrible internet. Slower then my last internet provider before I had moved (virgin media) and it constantly drops out. Literally every 20 minutes it completely stops working and I have to either wait 10 minutes for it to come back on or reset the router. I find myself constantly using my phone tethering to get work done which is costly and ridiculous considering I'm paying for dedicated internet. To top it off the customer service is dreadful; very unhelpful and it took months to actually get the internet set up. When the guy came round to install it he tried plugging it in said our phone line was incompatible (which according to the website it wasn't) and then just left without saying anything. Took us 3 phone calls to find out that it was compatible and that he just needed to use a microfilter. After having the dropping out problems we've been on the phone to them numerous times and they just go through the same process everytime (is everything connected etc..) And they at the end when it is they basically say they don't know what the problem is. Despite this to cancel it it will cost us almost £100. Very unsatisfied and I'd advise anyone to go with virgin media if they can get it in their area (unfortunately we cannot) either way, just stay clear of talk talk.

Absolutely awful company. My broadband was switched to TalkTalk from Homecall without any say in the matter. It had been fine up to about five months back, then speeds started falling almost overnight. I've been lucky to get 1mpbs even during the day, then, in the evening, when it was working at all, my speed was usually around 0.30. Can't listen to Spotify music, can't watch any Yahoo or Youtube videos. Called TalkTalk who went through the checks with me and told me to change the filter, which I did...no difference. They told me it would get better in 3 days. No, it didn't. Did I want an engineer round? No. My brother is a computer engineer and he's checked my system and found nothing wrong. Finally had enough and am now moving to BT. When I called TalkTalk for a MAC code, the girl did her utmost to get me to change my mind and got a little shirty when I said the service isn't fit for purpose. Steer clear of them, I suggest.

Ghastly! TalkTalk promised a seamless transition for former Virgin broadband customers. My web now sinks frequently from 7 meg to half a meg (while the line "stabilises" they said, expect up to 10 days) - and it's wrecking my business.
Their customer support people try quite hard once you get past the scripted stuff, but apart from that Sir Charles Dunstone should be ashamed of his evidently under-resourced infrastructure. AVOID!

Basically a poor service, the routers provided are substandard, so far I've had 4... as for customer service and fault resolution pretty awful usual approach is to replace router but wont tell you which one your getting! So far costs have increased and 15% speedy payent has reduced 10%. Cheap but a annoying service.

Well, stupid me should have read these pages! I signed up with Talk Talk about one month ago on a 24 month package. Things worked OK until Friday just gone when I logged onto the internet I was re directed to a Talk Talk page saying that my service was restricted because of an outstanding issue. This meant I owed them money. But my direct debit had gone out already so nothing was outstanding. I then spent almost two hours on the phone with them, the first thing they offered was a new router "the best and most powerful available" they said. They said they did a number of checks on their systems and found that this 'restriction' that had been placed on there was their fault and that the engineers would be working on it. My new router should be with me between 5 and 7 days and the engineers should resolve the problem in 24 to 96 hours!
As I run a small company from home heavily dependent upon internet access, this obviously causes many problems. So I am now using my mobile phone as a hot spot in order to try and keep my company alive. Not only that I have to file my VAT so I am likely to be hit with penalties if I cannot get my return and payment through in time.
Everytime I spoke with someone at Talk Talk I got the same message "I will try to help you" but they had no answer when I said ""but you have caused the problem"
Then they tell me "we will send you an email".....Hello, I have no internet!!!
Then "can you log into your account"..... Hello I have no internet......and so it goes on and on and on!
So, no internet, very poor customer service and they have just taken out my second direct debit so they are happy!
Seriously, look elswhere!
My view is that the D-Link Routers are not up to the job and hence they automatically offer you a new router.
During my extensive time on the phone with them, I could hear other agents in the background saying the same thing to other customers, which does indicate a serious problem with the initial hardware they send you.
