Flat white and Wi-Fi: One in four work remotely from a coffee shop at least once a week

Working latte again? Since 2020, the workplace has had some dramatic shifts. We researched into the UK’s remote working habits and how the workforce is getting the job done.

The results showed coffee shops are becoming a second office, as one in four choose to work from them at least once a week.

With 33 million people employed in the UK, that means over seven million workers are regularly opting to work in a café over their home or office to get the job done.

When it comes to mixing the daily grind with their daily brew, 60% coffee shop-loving remote workers named Costa Coffee as a favourite place to work.

Favourite coffee shops to work from:

Rank Coffee shop % of remote workers
1 Costa Coffee 62%
2 Starbucks 42%
3 Caffé Nero 29%
4 McDonald’s 14%
5 Pret a Manger 13%
6 Greggs 12%
7 Waterstones Café 12%
8 M&S Café 12%

The UK is Europe’s largest market for coffee shop outlets, and the average Brit spends over £700 a year in them – double the typical annual broadband bill. Coffee has also recently eclipsed tea as our favourite hot drink, with consumers buying more packs in supermarkets and 63% describing themselves as regular coffee drinkers, versus 59% for tea.

The most common reason given for working in a coffee shop is to be around other people, followed by workers saying they’re more productive away from home.

Reasons why people work from a coffee shop:

  1. To be around other people: 34%
  2. To improve productivity: 27%
  3. Saves money on their energy bill: 17%
  4. They prefer the atmosphere: 15%
  5. Faster internet: 5%

With more flexible attitudes to employment, 44% of UK workers now do their jobs fully or partly from home, and the UK was found to be the working-from-home capital of Europe.

60% have suffered a broadband outage at home in the last year, and 25% say disruptions to their internet service have prevented them from being able to do their job.
