Terrible services, and really disoriented and unhelpful customer service! My internet drops once a day every day for about an hour, and customer service told me that this is very normal and I should only call them for help if it starts dropping more than 2-3 times a day. Speed is also not very good, and I am surprised they ask for that much money for their service... An advice to people checking it out: just go to another provider.

North Wales Direct Save  
The worst utility provider ever experienced in my lifetime. Four times wrongly billed and then cut off for reclaiming a debit. They suggested I leave without penalty and fortunately I insisted this in writing. When I left they sent a bill for £234 for breaking contract
then another for a different amount with threat of Court Action. I got in touch with Ombudsman Service who investigated and agreed that Direct Save actually owed money to me. They ensured that this was returned plus a £65.00 Goodwill Payment and a statement that said they had been told to apologise. Not a very convincing apology. Avoid this company at all costs. They should have their license revoked and should not be allowed to trade.

The customer service when you actually reach an engineer is pretty helpful, just don't call after 8pm or you get a a promise of a callback that never materialises.

The broadband itself is an absolute omnishambles, 5 times in the space of 2 months myself and my family have had to call because something in their system keeps slowing the Internet down to under 1mb/s each time they say it's fixed only to happen again a couple weeks later.

The first two years were good! But now these scam artists are raiding my bank account for random payment's! I paid for a year up front and they took monthly payments too!!!!! I emailed the owner and it was (kind of) dealt with. And these gangsters started taking random payments again!

I will change 'providers' as soon as I can!!!

if there was zero or minus rating for this company then that is what they would get from me , i joined this diabolical provider in august last year, within 10 days of going live ,they took £ 14-00 from my account ,when i questioned this ,they said it was for line rental and calls over the 10 day period ,so like a fool i accepted it , then i was billed £37.97 for the whole of august with a paper bill costing £1.50,i didn't ask for a paper bill but an online bill when i joined .i phoned them which took 40 mins to answer ,asked why my bill was so high ,they said its usage ,i supplied them with a new email address to send future bills , but i cancelled my direct debit as i thought they were ripping me off ,all future bills were paper bills ,eventually my service was cut . i paid them in full £ 133.92 with a promise to be reconnected within 5 days .this took one month from paying , after many calls as to why its taking so long they blamed it on bt openreach ,which is an utter lie ,they have now sent a bill for £ 144.45 this is how it reads early termination fee january-june £90.00 admin fee £ 19.50 unreturned wireless router £29.13 + vat£ 5.63 total due £ 144.45 { i joiend them in august 2016 not june} i have since had 2 bills one for november and december i was cut off for the whole of december ,i could go on and on about their over priced call charges , and not forgetting the discount card which was never sent , avoid these criminals at all costs ,you will be ripped off, as i was ,their line spped is only 1.45mb as slow as dail up the router is something from a bygone age with 2 aerials at the back ,and in my opinion they need investigating for fraud and to be shut down

Like so many other reviewers on this site, my experience with Directsave Telecom has been utterly appalling.

When I decided to switch to another provider, I initially made the mistake of not giving 28 days notice, for which they charged £54.45 "admin fee" and router charge. As soon as I realised this, I used the new provider's cooling off period to cancel the switch, checking very carefully and repeatedly with Directsave that if I did this they would not take this charge. Their employee checked with the manager, confirmed that the charge would not be taken, and emailed confirmation.

Shortly afterwards the £54.45 was deducted from my account by direct debit.

Following multiple attempts to contact DST by phone, which were either unsuccessful or resulted in pointless conversations with people who knew nothing about my account, I cancelled the direct debit and gave 28 days notice to leave.

Since then (this was in November 2016) they have been sending me bills with the £54.45 still included, have demanded rudely that I send the router back, despite there being no mention of sending the router back anywhere in their Ts & Cs, and have billed me for service for the whole of November and December despite the fact that I left them in mid-November. In their latest bill they appear to threaten me with court action.

So ... like many others, my advice is DO NOT EVER, EVER THINK OF USING DIRECTSAVE - GO ANYWHERE ELSE.

By the way, I am now paying much less for 52 MB fibre than I was for 4MB with DirectSave.

Direct Save Telecom are already one of the cheapest broadband suppliers out there with their £1.95 broadband and calls package. However, this hasn't stopped them from introducing a new, cheaper deal! They now offer a fantastic unlimited broadband contract for only 95p a month!

This deal is on a 12 month contract and comes with a free wireless router. It also features an only pay for the calls you make phone package, charged at the standard Direct Save call rates. This is ideal for those who primarily use the inclusive minutes on their mobile phone contracts to make calls and don't want to pay extra for landline call features they simply won't use.

While you will need to pay £17.75 line rental a month, you can reduce these costs by paying £138 for a year up front, making it the equivalent of only £11.50 a month!

Direct Save have recently revamped their website to make it easier on the eye and to navigate around so that customers can easily find what they're looking for. The new-look website that works smoothly on both computers and mobile devices also makes the process of buying broadband from Direct Save much simpler, be it online or over the phone.

Direct Save offer a range of products to customers, including basic broadband and phone bundles, Fibre Optic broadband, and Fibre to the Home in selected areas. They are also one of the few Internet Service Providers who provide no contract ADSL broadband, allowing customers to control their account on a month by month basis, making these packages ideal for people in short-term accommodation and for students in need of cheap broadband.

Can I get Direct Save Telecom?

Direct Save Telecom's standard phoneline broadband products are available across the UK, although they are cheaper in some areas than others.

If you live outside their low-cost areas then costs increase substantially for packages. Luckily they re-sell the UK's largest low cost network so, unless you live in a rural or remote area, you're likely to be covered. You can find out if this applies to you by using our postcode checker.

Those outside of network areas may also experience slower connection speeds. These depend on various factors such as distance from the telephone exchange and whether the exchange has been upgraded from the older up to 8Mb technology or not.

Fibre-optic to the cabinet broadband from Direct Save Telecom is only available in areas where the BT exchange has been upgraded to fibre to the cabinet technology. If you live outside of those areas, you’re out of luck in terms of getting fibre broadband - though this only applies to half of UK households at most, and that proportion is decreasing as BT continue to upgrade their exchanges. Fibre-optic to the home broadband from Direct Save Telecom is only available in selected new build properties that have been connected by IFNL. This is in the process of being rolled out and is currently available in parts of over 40 English towns and cities. Direct Save Telecom offer a range of packages with 3 different contract lengths - 18 months, 12 months and rolling 28 day.

The choice of phone packages include free inclusive weekend calls, free inclusive weekend and evening calls, and free inclusive anytime calls with each being more expensive than the last, but giving you a greater degree of freedom in when you can call most UK landlines for no additional cost.

Both rolling contracts offer speeds of up to 17Mb. Your ADSL broadband speed will likely be a lot less than this due to various factors such as the quality of your line or your distance from your local BT telephone exchange - the further away you are, the slower your connection gets. You can use our postcode checker to find out how far you are from your local exchange. This restriction does not apply to the fibre to the cabinet package, although speeds there can also vary to an extent based on your distance from the street cabinet. Direct Save Telecom claim to give you the fastest speed they can.

Which package should I choose?

Direct Save Telecom customers’ main choice is between the long-term contracts and the rolling contracts.

The long-term contracts represent the best value for money and mean no hassle of needing to sort out contracts for a two year period. On the other hand, they also tie you to one provider (and one package) for that duration too, and this can be a problem if your living circumstances change during that time. The rolling contracts offer greater flexibility, needing only 28 days notice to cancel, and are great for people whose living circumstances are likely to change, but they are also more expensive on a monthly basis than the long-term contracts.

If you do opt for a long-term contract, the next big decision is primarily about speed: ADSL or fibre? Fibre can be a lot faster and it is tempting, but the stated typical ADSL speed of 17Mb could be more than enough for many of Internet users, allowing not only casual browsing and email usage, but also watching videos, using Skype or downloading music. There is no point paying extra for speed you will not need, especially when the cheap ADSL packages come with more extras than the fibre - namely, an inclusive wireless router and inclusive evening calls.

Yet speed might be the priority, especially if you are a gamer or other regular heavy Internet user, and especially if your connection is shared with other heavier Internet users, or just a lot of other people. The speed of the connection will be divided by those using it any one time, and so larger households including student flats and large families will benefit from having a fibre connection. People living far from telephone exchanges might also benefit from fibre if they can get it, as their ADSL speed is likely to suffer.

If you instead opt for a rolling contract, then you need to decide what call package to go for and whether to have a download cap or not. A 20GB download cap is relatively low, although high enough for most casual internet users who do not regularly download files or watch streaming video. If you are a heavier internet user, or if you share your connection with other people, the truly unlimited package is a safer bet, meaning you won't have to worry about hitting your data allowance. The ‘Broadband Family’ name for that package is therefore quite apt, being especially appropriate for families and larger Internet-active households like student flats.

If you're lucky enough to live in a Fibre To The Home enabled area then you have a range of choices depending on your speed allowance and budget. All come with a 12 month contract and truly unlimited broadband, so the question to ask is how much speed do you need or can afford. As the service is full fibre, you can expect to get the full advertised download and upload speeds. As a full HD video stream requires only 5Mb, you may find that the 25Mb service is fast enough for your needs if you're a small household. If you download or stream more or if getting things as quickly as possible is important, then you'll see benefits all the way up to the up to 300Mb product.

Upload speed is also an important factor to consider. If you're a content creator who uploads a lot of video or other large files, or if you make heavy use of cloud storage for files, photo sharing and backup, you may find the 5Mb upload speed on the FTTH 25MB causes a considerable bottleneck and you'd easily feel the benefit of any of the faster options.

Points to consider before you choose

  • Would you prefer cheaper costs and stability, or a flexible contract that can work with changes in living circumstances?
  • How many people will be using your broadband connection at any one time, especially for heavy downloading or online games?
  • Would the expense of the faster speed or unlimited usage be worth it for you?
  • How far do you live from your BT telephone exchange, and will this be a problem for your ADSL speeds?
  • How far do you live from your BT street cabinet, and will this be a problem for your fibre to the cabinet speeds?
  • Do you live in a IFNL fibre to the home coverage area and which download and upload speed option will meet your needs and budget?

What are the drawbacks of Direct Save Telecom?

Let's face it, not everything can be perfect, and even the best deals may have a downside.

  • More expensive outside low cost areas - If you live outside of Direct Save Telecom’s low cost areas, the cost of their deals rises substantially, meaning you have to pay a lot more for essentially the same service as those in the low cost areas - this is especially damaging given Direct Save Telecom’s low-cost appeal.
  • No standalone broadband - All Direct Save Telecom packages include a home phone service, meaning that you might need to pay for a phone that you will not use, or need to switch phone provider when you’d rather not. However, the various inclusive phone deals mean that this would only be a problem to a few.
  • No extras - Direct Save Telecom offer very few extras with their packages, even in comparison with other cheaper providers. On the other hand, this allows them to focus even more on keeping the cost of the actual broadband (and phone) service itself down.
  • Possible charges leaving the rolling contract - If you leave your 28 day contract by moving house or by switching to a service that requires cancellation of the line rather than migration of broadband - such as mobile broadband or switching to Virgin Media fibre - then a £35 'cease charge' is payable. If you no not return the router provided, an additional fee of £35 is also payable.
  • Fibre to the home limited availability - Direct Save's ultrafast fibre to the home service is currently only available at selected new builds in 40+ English towns and cities connected to the IFNL network.
  • Relatively low upload speed on FTTH - Despite the maximum download speed of 300Mb, FTTH product range from 5Mb to 30Mb for upload speed, which could seem very slow in comparison if you upload a lot of large files or use cloud backup services.
