They slowly jack your prices up month by month until you're paying a fortune, but these days when you try and contact them to get the price back down, you can't! You also need to contact them to leave, so even that is barely possible. I'm told you have to write them an actual physical letter. Scumbags.

Received price rise letter towards end of January. Phoned to cancel and put in queue. Call was cut off 3 times by VM exactly 40 mins into waiting. Followed website advice to write in as an alternative and mailed first class. A week later, no acknowledgement. Contacted chat service to cancel and complain. Told you cannot cancel in writing even though website says you can. VM offered to cancel there & then but tried to impose cancellation policy and restart 30 day notice. Agent also tried to argue that you still have to give 30 day notice, even though latter their letter said you can cancel without penalty. Refused to escalate the matter for an hour+ by avoiding answering the question "Have you escalated ...?". When finally started chat with a Team Manager, no concession whatsoever. Only agreed to send an email to administrators to check for acknowledgement of my letter.

This company are only interested in maximising profit out of customers, even once they have decided to leave. They don’t even seem to care about their own reputation. Their customer service (overseas) is unbelievable, if you can even get through to receive some. Worst ISP customer service in 30 years of using one.

Complete set of total incompetent disorganised unprofessional idiots If I were richard branson I would be cringing to be associated with this outfit.Customer services is beyond a joke.I bought a sim only deal off them then cancelled it before it even arrived and took out a contract phone with them. There is no way you can cancel they just repeat same questions off there prompt screen to you!!! I have now got a bad debt showing on my credit score for a sim i have never used returned to them Once my contract is up they are history even if they offered a free contract phone for a year i would tell them to stick it where the sun does not shine W___ERS

I should have known better than try anything with the Virgin name on it as every Virgin brand I have tried in the past has been…shall we say, ****ing cr@p, and Virgin Mobile is no different.

Today I went to the local Virgin Media shop and bought a PAYG SIM. Told the guy that I wanted to try out the service to see what it was like and wanted the PAYG SIM with 2GB of 4G data. He tried to sell me a contract but I refused and again told him I only wanted to try the coverage and data speed.

So I paid £10 for the SIM on their JAM pack, went home and put the SIM into my phone. Several SMS's arrived saying the SIM was good to go, but it displayed 3G instead of 4G. So I waited and waited, rebooted the phone a few times and waited some more…no change. I then tried to go online using the phone and guess what? No internet, no email, no mobile data at all!

One of the SMS messages was about setting up the voicemail, so I decided to do that to give the SIM another few minutes to activate everything.

Anyway, after about 20 minutes of going trying to get online and going nowhere I called their customer services who told me that I needed to text "ALL" to 789922 to activate the mobile data as there was no access point configuration on the phone (which I had already figured out).

Now the guy in the shop never mentioned this and in the entire pack containing the SIM there is absolutely NO mention of this hugely important bit! So who knows how many other people are coming up against this!

Furthermore, the woman on the overseas call centre (Rose) told me my SIM plan had been changed to Starter or Standard or something similar, and as such I would only get 1GB data instead of the 2GB I had paid for, and also that she couldn't change it back - I'd have to go back to the shop where I bought the SIM to do that!!!

So I went back to the shop today (Wednesday) and was put on the phone to their overseas call centre as the shop couldn't do anything, despite what I had been told by the call centre. After speaking to the woman in the call centre for 25 minutes she said that my PAYG plan had been changed, she didn't know why, and that the only way to get my original plan back was to wait until 3 September when the current plan would expire, and then top-up! So, I'm now in the situation where I have lost 1GB data, loads of minutes and texts and will have to pay another £10 to get them back! What a joke! I'm not doing that.

After the call I spoke to the guy who had sold me the SIM and mentioned to him about having to send a text message to activate mobile data and that there was nothing whatsoever in the SIM pack about this, and he simply said that some packs mention it, some don't!! What???

Despite me sending the text to activate the mobile data, it simply did not work - I had to go onto the internet on my pc and search for the Virgin Mobile UK APN settings and enter them manually. During my searches I came across many, MANY others having this problem, so it seems this is well-known, so how Virgin continue to get away with this non-/mis-information is beyond me.

Now, I don't know why I bothered as my download speed is 3.5Mb/s and upload under 2Mb/s! 4G?? I think not!!

Do yourself a favour and avoid this disaster called Virgin Mobile.

I have two mobile phone contract but what they did not tell us you pay for your monthly bill contract and you have to pay another bill on top just for the phone so you think you have a good deal but in fact it is twice the price and now they keep cutting both phones of and saying not direct debit set up but it has been set up this company is a joke and would never recommend virgin mobile total RIP off

F*&^ing pathetic. Just started off on their service due to the tenants who lived in this place last year using it too. Before this it always used to cut off regularly and drop, with very low house coverage and irregular speeds. Then we had no internet for three days due to some weird issue. Now its back to the lacklustre quality we originally had. Hurray we have sh*tty internet again.

Beyond awful. The absolute worst customer service for any utility I have experienced. Never touch these people - you will regret it if you do. Incompetent in everything they do. Nearly 2 hours of a call to query a bill that they messed up (they have basically taken several hundred pounds from us), to be passed from pillar to post with no information being transferred from one agent to the next, and then they hung up. I will never buy any service again from Virgin. Any part of it.

With out a doubt the worse broadband provider I have ever come across since broadband started.Signed up to the 100mbps contract from day one problems, on mac devices getting 5-20mbps fluctuating at best on wifi customer service tells me that's what you can loose on wifi 80% Really obviously think people are fools. So why am I getting 106mbps on the pc laptop the issue is that they only support ivp4 not ivp6 which can cause problems for macs if router is rubbish. Anyway the desision was made to move the router from down stairs to upstairs so my main mac computer could be hard wired as when it was I got speed of 100mbps they said this would be free so they moved it. Suddenly I get 5-15mbps hard wired they send out engineer after hours of calls, his answer is it's a utilization issue coz system needs upgrading so will have to put up with it until September while work is done we are currently in April but it was working fine hard wired before it was moved????? No one seemed to understand this point how could moving it from 1 place to another suddenly create a utilization problem????? These people are really thick they just blurt out the same excuses for ever issue like robots . so for half my contract period I'm paying £30 a month but getting 10mbps average so what will you do about that £8 discount sir like wtf I'm getting 80-90% less than I should and you expect me to pay over two thirds of the full amount for one tenth of the agreed service yeah right so they say the will sort out speed. Which they come and do and for today it's been good then I get my first months bill £166.00 they charged for engineer to come out these guys are crazy call to customer service who tell me oh yes you right sir there is a note on account to say there is no charge for engineer don't know why you were charged ……… I do coz your f%$king useless needless to say terminated contract on the spot. Two weeks service call every other day three engineer visits 10nhour on the phone think these guys just employed me bunch of jokers

How to get Wi-Fi when you're on holiday

Hopefully, holidays are back on the agenda this summer. And do we need them. But whether you're planning a staycation, or have decided to venture abroad, you'll also need Wi-Fi, so you can get local information, stay in touch with the rest of the world, and keep yourself entertained as you travel.

Fortunately, you've got a number of options, and they won't cost you a fortune to use them. Let's take a look at the cheapest ways to get Wi-Fi when you're holiday at home or abroad.

Hotel Wi-Fi

The best way to get Wi-Fi when you're abroad is likely to be through your hotel. Most have it these days, and many hotels and hotel chains offer it for free, sometimes with the option to upgrade to a faster service.

But you may need to take a precaution.

The rule when it comes to any public Wi-Fi service is that a password protected connection is better than something that's fully open, but that's still no guarantee that it's completely secure. This applies equally to your Airbnb rental or airport Wi-Fi as it does to hotels.

You don't need to worry about this if you're only doing some casual browsing. But if you're planning to log in to sensitive sites like your bank account, then you should set up and install a VPN first. This ensures your connection and data are fully encrypted. Alternatively, you could just use your phone and its data connection for these tasks, so that you bypass the Wi-Fi altogether.

Hotel Wi-Fi can vary quite a lot in terms of performance. Some may or may not be very good, and you might find that some bandwidth-heavy services like Netflix are blocked. If you have the chance to upgrade to a faster service then that would be the best way to use these types of sites, but keep in mind that you'll likely be paying for 24 hours of access, so the fees could rack up over the course of your stay.

Mobile broadband

Another good option for getting Wi-Fi at home or abroad is through a mobile broadband service from providers like Virgin Mobile, EE, O2, Vodafone and Three.

These use the 4G or 5G phone network to give you internet access through a personal mobile router to which you can connect all your devices. You can also use it with a dongle connected to your laptop, or on a SIM-enabled iPad, although both of these options make it a little harder to share your connection with your other gadgets.

Mobile providers haven't reintroduced roaming charges post-Brexit, so you can use your mobile broadband allowance in many other countries. You should check where before your sign up - coverage is mostly for EU countries, so if you're heading further afield the price may be prohibitively expensive.

Even within the EU you might have fair usage limitations placed on some packages. And, of course, you'll be reliant on mobile coverage wherever you are. Head off for a city break and you'll be fine; go camping in the countryside and you might want to check the coverage maps for the area first.

Your phone's plan

Don't forget also that iPhones and Android phones can be set up as wireless hotspots, enabling you to get your laptop or tablet online wherever you are.

You'll find the option in Settings > Personal Hotspot on most iPhones, and on most Android phones you'll find it by swiping down twice from the top of the screen to open the Quick Settings panel, then tapping the Hotspot or Mobile Hotspot option.

Using your phone as a hotspot works in the same way as a separate mobile broadband plan, and can be a good option if you've got a decent data allowance. You'll get the same coverage without roaming charges across the EU, but will have to pay a lot more elsewhere. In either case, keep an eye on your data use. You'll have to buy top-ups in advance if you overshoot what your plan allows.

There may be other restrictions, too. If you've got an unlimited plan, check that it allows for tethering (connecting devices via the hotspot feature), and note that there may be a fair use policy in place.

Virgin Media offer 6 months half price on Collections

Virgin Media are offering 6 months half price on their TV, broadband and phone collections.

The Essential Collection starts at £13 a month, increasing to £26 a month after the first 6 months. It comes with over 90 TV channels, a 500GB TiVo box and unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines and Virgin mobiles and an up to 30Mb fibre optic broadband connection.

Similarly, the Premiere Collection also comes with a 500GB TiVo box and unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines and Virgin mobiles, plus over 185 TV channels and an up to 60Mb broadband connection. It costs £24 a month, increasing to £48 after the first 6 months.

The VIP Collection is £49.50 for the first 6 months, increasing to £90 a month. It comes with an up to 100Mb broadband connection, over 250 TV channels and a 1TB TiVo box. The included phone package includes unlimited Anytime calls to UK landlines, 0845 and 0870 numbers and all mobile providers. It also includes Talk International for cheaper international calls.

All three of these Collection packages come with Virgin TV Anywhere (which allows you to watch live TV and use On Demand from your computer or mobile device) and free installation.

The Classic Collection remains at £8 a month for 6 months, which works out at better than half price. It comes with over 55 TV channels, a 500GB TiVo box, unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines and Virgin mobiles and a fibre optic broadband connection of up to 30Mb a month. Installation costs £49.95.

Can I get mobile broadband from Virgin Mobile?

Virgin Mobile are a mobile virtual network operator. Instead of running their own network, they use EE's 4G infrastructure. This is the UK's largest and fastest 4G network.

Virgin Mobile can be accessed by over 99% of the population. In theory, their service isn't quite as fast as EE - it's capped at a still impressive 85Mb for downloads and 35Mb for uploads. However, in practice, Virgin say that this produces average speeds of 37Mb downloads and 13Mb uploads. This is in the same region as what EE users are getting.

Virgin don't use the EE 5G network, and haven't yet launched any 5G services.

Can I get 5G on Virgin Mobile?

5G is not currently available through Virgin Mobile, and won't be through EE. At some unconfirmed date in the future they will start offering 5G through Vodafone.

Late in 2021 Virgin Mobile will switch their service from using the EE network to using Vodafone. Virgin's new agreement with Vodafone includes 5G services, and they've said that they will launch these before the switchover date. However they haven't yet confirmed when this is likely to happen.

The switch to Vodafone will ultimately affect all Virgin's customers, although they have said that no-one will need a new SIM card. Coverage across the two networks is roughly similar, especially in urban areas.

What Virgin Mobile broadband deals can I get?

Virgin Mobile offer just the one mobile broadband package.

The Virgin Mobile broadband plan comes with the Huawei E5573BS portable wireless router. It lets you connect 10 devices at once, and offers download speeds of up to 150Mb - although the speeds you'll actually get will be limited by the Virgin network. The router is designed for use on the go, and has a four hour battery life.

It is available on six plans with three different data allowances:

  • 3GB data for £8 a month, with no upfront cost on a 12 month contract or £39.99 up front on a 30 day deal
  • 6GB data for £12 a month, with no upfront cost on a 12 month contract or £39.99 up front on a 30 day deal
  • 15GB data for £20 a month, with no upfront cost on a 12 month contract or £39.99 up front on a 30 day deal

Any unused data rolls over to the next month. If you go over your data limit you'll be charged £3 per GB for each day you use the mobile internet. You can put a spending cap in place to protect against unexpectedly high bills.

Virgin offer a small range of Apple and Samsung tablets. These start at £10 a month for 1GB data on a Samsung Galaxy Tab A, and rise to £34 a month for 40GB data on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6. You can also get SIM-only deals offering up to 50GB of data on a 12 month contract, or 100GB on a 24 month plan.

Should I choose mobile broadband from Virgin Mobile?

With low data allowances and no 5G speeds, the mobile broadband plans from Virgin Mobile are best for occasional use.

Virgin Mobile comes with some perks, like roaming in 43 European countries on SIM-only deals, and access to over 3.5 million hotspots around the UK. You might also be able to make extra savings if you're already a Virgin Media broadband or TV customer.

But on the whole, these mobile broadband deals are fairly modest and more likely to augment the data allowance you've already got on your phone than anything more ambitious. Of course, when Virgin Mobile launch their 5G plans, it may well be a different story. Watch this space!
