What is it?
It's broadband that is delivered to your house by means of a fibre optic cable rather than over your older copper BT telephone line. A fibre optic cable is made up of very thin strands of glass which laser light is beamed down at incredibly fast speeds (quite literally the speed of light!) to carry data to your house. Unlike broadband that is delivered over copper telephone lines fibre optic broadband does not get slower the further away you live from your exchange.
Can I Get It?
It's estimated that around 65% of the UK can get fibre optic broadband of one sort or another. You can use our postcode checker to see if it is available in your area.
Who supplies fibre optic broadband?
The main supplier of fibre optic broadband is Virgin Media, though the actual fibre optic wire does not go all the way to your property, it's usually only as far as a cabinet on your street, with the last few metres made up of older style cables, but the distance is so short it doesn't affect the speeds.
There are a few other suppliers of fibre optic broadband such as H2O, but they are only available in a very small number of areas. As more suppliers become available we'll list them here.
