While many countries use fixed-line broadband options as their primary connection, relying on mobile data for lighter tasks such as messaging or VoIP apps. Others have no choice but to use mobile internet for everything. In regions where physical infrastructure is limited, mobile data serves as the vital backbone for communication, education, and healthcare.

Our findings give a clear view of global mobile data pricing. This comprehensive study compares the cost of one gigabyte (1 GB) of data from over 3,400 tariffs in 234 countries, nations and territories around the world.

What Broadband Genie's experts had to say

"There is a clear digital divide when it comes to the cost of mobile data. Overall, consumers in South America, Asia, and Europe have access to cheaper options, while countries across Africa, Oceania, and North America pay significantly more. However, it's important to note that no two mobile tariffs are the same. Data limits, included call minutes and generation of mobile internet heavily impact what consumers ultimately pay.

"While the UK trails many European countries, it performs much better in global mobile data rankings than it does in fixed-line broadband, where we found it ranks a lowly 70th.

"There's heaps of what the broadband market can learn from the mobile world. The mobile switching process has been refined over many years, and consumers are familiarised to it. Access to clear information when your contract is up, and regulations around unlocked handsets, mean mobile is years ahead of broadband.

"In Ofcom's latest complaint league tables, broadband average complaints per customer were more than double those for mobile. A trend that has remained consistent for over a decade. If the mobile market can get it right, we have to ask why broadband can't do the same."

Methodology

We gathered pricing information and data allowances for 3,446 mobile data plans in 234 countries. We calculated the average monthly cost of 1 GB of data in each country.

Prices were sourced from official local network providers and trusted comparison sites available in that area.

Timing note: Data for this study was collected between 6 July 2026 and 10 July 2026. Prices show market conditions from this period. The data may not account for geopolitical or economic changes that happened after this date.
