Most people come here and react in a negative manner, Most of their issues are down to user error.

SSE has been great these last few months, Speed hasn't dropped from what was promised, I can also double my fibre speeds to 76mbps for an extra 3 quid.

If you go with sse don't take it with you when you move, over a month to swap to the new house and had to take out a new contract rather than a direct transfer. since then the connection has been hesitant and intermittent often disconnecting and reconnecting on the wifi. was told during the move they would move my connection date forward seeing as we had been trying to get this organised for over a month before the move and only managed to speak to someone that knew what they were doing a few days before the move, but what they didn't tell me was, that was just the phone line and the internet connection would still be another 3 weeks. no point ringing up to complain, all they want is to close the complaint whether its resolved or not. I'll be looking elsewhere when the time comes, cheap tariff seem to equal cheap service. i guess you get what you pay for rather than what they promise

It’s a real shame that it’s not in the least bit reliable!! It is as though when the customer service helpline closes the problems start which in my eyes is unforgivable! Although when you get through to them they advise you to turn the router off on then back on, it’s embarrassing to be honest with you

I have a busy household who consume bandwidth like there is no tomorrow. We were with Virgin until last year, but were having problems with the twin boys' xbox gaming, as they were getting kicked off servers in the evenings. Virgin told us there was a faulty bit of kit attached to the same node of us, but they had NO WAY TO LOCATE IT. As soon as we could leave, We did. SSE were doing the fibre intro deals so I snapped up the 78Mb/s package.

It all started out quite well. Speeds seemed fast (I didnt obsess over it and benchmark it every day or anything) but over time the service has got slower and slower and slower. I'm writing this now at 9.08pm and I'm getting 0.59Mb/s on the download cycle, 0.11Mb/s on the upload cycle. We restart the BT fibre box and the shocking Technocolor router (the worst router in the world - official) a couple of times a week. Its still rubbish. Calling SSE broadband is a waste of time. Not once have I spoken with anyone who has any technical skills (I work in IT/networking and know what I'm talking about). The helplines seem to be staffed by young girls trained for sales. Think I'll give them a call tomorrow and tell them I'm cancelling my direct debit in protest at the rubbish broadband speeds I'm getting, see where that goes.

Oh, and dont bother calling them late at night or on a weekend. There is no one there.

Moved to SSE recently from BT, who kept adding things to my account I didn't ask for (i.e. BT Sport). I have never switched before, however, and was a little apprehensive about doing it.

I have gone from paying £200 a quarter to £87 for the same level of service (17mb unlimited broadband and anytime calls). SSE have also given me this for £5 a month for the first 6 months (including line rental!).

The speeds are also faster, as I have a new router, I suppose.

Thus, I am very impressed. Their energy prices are totally extortionate, but broadband is fantastic. Thanks, SSE.

Switch went smoothly, speeds much the same as my previous 2 suppliers (TalkTalk and BT), so far impressive results at half the price. Supplied modem was pretty bad - especially wifi. Switched to my own Negear D6400 VDSL2 Modem Router with big improvements in line speed and WiFi performance.

Never had any problems, customer service is fantastic and not once has the connection dropped. Not overally keen on traffic management but I understand the pros and cons. Speed can vary but overall reliable. They did however promise me at least 50mbps but only get 35mpbs otherwise I would given them 5 stars for everything.

17Mb Con - YOU WILL NEVER GET 17Mb or anywhere near it. SSE say 3.4 - 7 Mbs = 17Mb contract. With only 0.5Mb upload on top leads to an abismal service. PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THIS CON AND DO NOT USE SSE. SSE ARE DELIBERATELY ABUSING YOU

Awful provider. I originally signed up with them because they had a signup offer going with British Airways for bonus Avios if you sign up for their Fibre package. I figured SSE were middle of the pack so how bad can they be and I could use the Avios so signed up.

I got an e-mail saying SSE will take care of the switch from my previous provider after a month or so. A month passes and.. nothing. I called them up and get told they don't know what happened but they'll look into it and get in touch. I received an automated text message saying "Unfortunately our automated system was unable to place your order" and the new go live date would be another two weeks.

So 6 weeks later I have Wifi and wait for my bonus Avios. Crickets.. So I call them up again and they say I should contact British Airways. I call British Airways and they say I should contact SSE. I assume the bonus Avios weren't honoured because they were "unable to place" my broadband order. Anyway, getting those Avios was a lost cause but at least I had Wifi.

Spotty Wifi that is fast at times, slowed to a crawl at others. Once I started home working during the pandemic, it became clear that the SSE fibre broadband couldn't handle Skype calls longer than 20 minutes before cutting out altogether.

14 months into my contract, I moved houses. I was told by SSE that they would switch my broadband to my new address in two weeks and an engineer would not be needed. Two weeks comes and goes and no internet. I call them up and they say "Oh, we can only get an engineer out to you a week from now so your broadband will be switched to your new address then..." Three weeks without internet has been very constructive for my home working!

In conclusion, the broadband speed and reliability is worse than I had with Sky or BT. SSE's communication and customer service is awful. And the main incentive for switching to SSE in the first place wasn't honoured. Can't wait for the 18 month period to be over so I can switch to another provider.

Having just paid £96 to exit my contract early, I can attest to the fact that SSE broadband is not fit for purpose. By their own admission, I've never managed to get more than 8mpbs and I live in inner city Birmingham, so I can only imagine what it's like if you live in a rural area. Uploading anything is impossible, streaming is woeful and trying to use Skype or facetime is completely futile. It is simply not fit for purpose. Don't waste your money, go elsewhere. This from somebody who's decided to pay an exit fee in order to be rid of this cheap, shoddy, laughable service.

I switched our home broadband and telephone service around a month ago, having checked this website out seeking guidance in finding a new broadband provider.
Maybe it's the luck of the draw or perhaps it depends upon where you live - I don't know, but I was in the first instance extremely concerned to read so many adverse reviews concerning SSE broadband on this website, particulary because I was interested in changing to their service because their charges are so reasonable.

However upon delving further into the matter I noticed that BT, our previous internet provider, who to be fair had provided us with a perfectly satisfactory iinternet service for the past eleven years had also received great numbers of bad reviews, so much so that I came away of the opinion that most reviews appeared to had been written by internet users who were harbouring all kinds of varying gripes against their broadband providers, and it seemed that subscribers who had actually received a satisfactory service had become complacent and did not trouble to submit any reviews anywhere which is a great shame as it does not allow readers to gain the benefit of their experiences and consequently miss out on any positive & constructive comments that might had been made regarding the numerous broadband service providers.

We wished to leave BT as they had become so expensive, and their price increases were becoming far too frequent for my liking .. .. .. .. However, as they say 'Nothing ventured - Nothing gained!!' so bearing all of what I've said in mind, I signed up with SSE purely on price considerations for their 'Up to 17mb Standard Broadband.'
I deliberately left a period of one month prior to submitting my review in order to permit my new broadband service to settle down, and to also allow a period of time for me to assess its capabilities prior to my submitting a review regarding SSE's service over a short period of time - be it good or bad.

Speaking as normal domestic users, (ie; surfing, emails, blogging, viewing webcams etc.) my wife and myself (the only users at home) are so far extremely pleased with SSE's service together with their most reasonable prices too. We are paying just £21.50 monthly (on an eighteen month contract} for broadband which also includes line rental as well as free 'anytime phone calls' also which is far less than what we were paying BT before we switched, in fact it's turned out to be well over 50% cheaper.

Our SSE telephone and broadband connection was made correctly on the changeover day of which we were advised of well beforehand (9th May 2017,) and the service since then has been most satisfactory, and the supplied router's wi-fi signal reaches all of the rooms in our two bedroom bungalow satisfactorily, which I found was quite simple to set up, and it works well.
We've had no problems at all with our SSE broadband at all, and the service is well suited to our needs - in fact we are pleased that we took many of the adverse reviews written here with a pinch of salt, and I'm able to say that we are absolutely delighted with SSE's service.

Thank you SSE for a good service at a reasonable price.

I moved from Immediately, which was a great service but became too expensive at £37 per month. I received the router and plugged it in the same as my Plusnet box through the openreach box. My speeds varied drastically and I wasn't at all happy. I found out I could miss out the openreach box and connect the fibre phoneline direct into the sse technicolour box by setting it up for VSL. Immediately saw a big improvement in speed and am now happier with SSE

Throughout my contract broadband was very temperamental

After I left they billed me for three months extra refused for months to correct sent threats to cut off service

Didn’t answer phone or hung up when I pointed out I had left

    Didn’t answer letters or emails

Finally deleted false months but final bill has a part billing charge (they didn’t send any they are charging me for those threatening letters) and one random days broadband in march

Biggest load of rubbish ever, speeds abysmal and every time I call up they make me do the same things over and over again, do broadband speed test etc etc, then today I was told that my router must be at waist height in my home !!!!! Was stupid enough to take out this awful contract, roll on 16 months time when I can go back to bt or I may cave in and pay to get out of contract early or I might seek legal advice , be warned !

We have had no internet service from SSE since 14 February 2020. Despite multiple calls, SSE has been unable to fix the fault.
They have said that SSE appointed Vodafone as their new phone and broadband provider in September, and all customers underwent a migration from BT/TalkTalk to Vodafone in recent weeks. The migration failed for the TalkTalk service. We were first told we were the only customers affected, then informed there were 40 customers in this situation. The latest we have been told is that about 2,000 customers are affected. We understand that SSE have a review meeting on 24 February to find a way out of this. Has anyone else got further information or been told differently?

Terribly slow broadband, typically takes 10-15 seconds once clicking a link on google to the page opening and often just does nothing and freezes. It may be 50% cheaper than BT but, from my experience, the saving is painful. Personally, I would avoid.

Seriously the worst internet provider ever - no contact - put the price up 10 pounds without any notice - internet is unstable down to 6-7mbs most of the time but paying for 70mbs - no customer service - unethically using Covid as a reason to be terrible - basically a bottom feeder of a company

Awful service, Internet drops out numerous times throughout the day, at other times slows down for much picture quality when streaming is unwatchable. Customer service is absolutely terrible, spend such a ridiculous amount of time waiting to get through to an advisor on the phone we've given up and emailed, no response to emails at all though. Avoid at all costs, by far the worst broadband provider we have ever had the misfortune to deal with.

Poor service from start to finish waited 6 weeks being told my provider was holding up the change over. In reality sse could not get their act together. Went to complaints team who could only advise that they could take my phone over but the the broadband would take another 20+ days. Customer service not good. Can't comment on broadband as the company is incapable of providing this service. Avoid, Avoid, Avoid!

I had to ring twice before receiving my router. Then received router 3 days after my internet service started.
I then cancelled the contract having been advised by SSE Talk that no exit charges would be levied if I cancelled within my "happiness" period (60 days within service date). But they still tried to levy extra charges 1 month after my cancellation.
Also, after having called and emailed them several times, I am still waiting for the prepaid envelope they promised several times for returning the router for which they threatened a further charge. Talking to the complaints manager was equally useless.

If I could give zero stars that would be too many. Takes on average 40 mins to answer the phone lines. I switched in September and still awaiting my phone number in Jan 2020.

Since day one of switch over from plusnet my speed is in the 5-15MPS when before I was getting 50-70Mps I have given up ringing and waiting for this to get sorted one common excuse is it takes a few days to settle which is utter nonsense I have emailed them requesting disconnection and will go back to plusnet or BT. Don't use this company.

Service can be slow sometimes and drop out at others. Calling customer services is too painful and they do not call you back as promised.
My main gripe however is that when your contract is at an end they do not warn you at all. They simply double the cost of your bill & take the direct debit. The call centre are not interested in complaints - they admit they do this and are sorry you are unhappy!
Devious company - would not recommend at all!

Being technically "challenged" I really wasn't looking forward to trying to set this up , and expected I would have to get somebody to do it for me . The pack arrived well in advance of the switch over date (13th) I read all of the instructions ,and looked at the diagrams . British Telecom cut us off pretty promptly , and the SSE service was there immediately , phone working fine , when I plugged in the broadband connections they all worked fine too , amazingly !! Put the new codes into laptops , kindle etc and we were all set up by 10.00 am , fantastic service .The speed seems faster than we originally had and its £30.00 a month cheaper than our original provider .It's only day 2 but so far it's still working perfectly . Would just like to say that if I can do it anybody can , as I'm useless with anything technical .We were kept informed of the change over date by SSE , and the pack was self explanatory , very easy to set up the change over and the equipment .

The worst broadband provider that you can imagine. They are not reliable at all. They kept me waiting for more than a month and then told me that I need to wait another 12 days for them to connect me a new phone line bcs they didn't realised what I ordered at all. And customer service just keeps saying sorry and not creating a solution at all. Not help full. Do not ever trust and wait for them they are totally scam.

Started of really good. Was warned by BT that my connection would be throttled by SSE. I thought they were spinning me a yarn to try and get me to stay but I now suspect they were right. I get a 70mb connection in the morning which goes down to just less than 1mb at around 6pm each evening. Upload speeds are remain constant at 12mb at all times.

Ok. So i signed up with SSE about 3 years ago (on 18month plan) when the area first became fibre enabled and my existing supplier didnt provide a fibre service. They had a crazy deal on where it was free for the first 6 months.

Ridiculously - they didnt request the fibre connection from BT until the day they took over my line - basically leaving me without internet for a month while I awaited connecting.

However, since then I have had good reliable service. Speed is constantly above 30mb. There was a month where the speeds really dropped off to the extent even a youtube video would buffer and I was barely getting 1mb when I tested - however I emailed and they did some tests and resolved the issue pretty swiftly to be fair.

Since then - aside from (literally a couple of times) where I have just needed to reset the router, I have had no problems at all with the service.

We are moving house in about a month though now so have found myself here looking to see what deals there are and have realised that having been out of contract for a while we are probably overpaying. I suppose given my last experience switching to them has made me nervous about changing again for fear of being left internetless for a month.

We had limited choice of broadband provider as we're renting temporarily and didn't want to be tied into a yearly contract. SSE offer a monthly contract so despite a lot of bad reviews we went ahead and we were impressed right from the start. Customer service has a call back service so we don't have to hold on forever (and they really do call back!) and the advisers are friendly and helpful. We were connected earlier than expected which was great and we've been using it for over a month now with no problems. When we move to our permanent home, we're considering SSE for a longer term contract. Highly recommended!

Internet outage is now a joke. 1 year ago, it was 1 a week, now it’s 5 times a day ranging from 5 minutes to many hours. Complained, and of course, no reply.

When being a new customer looking to take my business to SSE ... you'd have thought someone would have been interested in making contact with me ... but no. Decided that if they cannot be bothered with new business then they certainly wont be bothered once your captured. Shame on you

It's the same old con. Advertising super fast broadband and giving 3.75-Mb/s instead of 45-Mb/s. If you go to money saving expert they have a free complaint tool called "How to complain about your broadband provider" and they will take your case to the ombudsman for you if it's not rectified by SSE as they are accountable for false advertising. God bless and don't give up.

So I joined SSE 15 months ago on a 24 month half price fibre deal with 80mbps fibre. I had a bad few months with very slow download speeds of 0.2mbps after 4 each day till midnight.

I labor d with it for a year until I found out I could get off the contract after 12 months for 30 quid. I paid the money because daisy heavily speed limits certain traffic at peak times rendering the internet unusuable. Facebook videos don't work. Direct downloads e.g pz4 updates don't work. Anything other than web sites and Amazon prime works. I'm leaving tomorrow thankfully. Good riddance.
