Default 21CN WBC? What is it? Can it help a long line

What is 21CN WBC, we are at the end of a long line and its that bad we are thinking of moving. We have fibre optic laid by the housebuilder but no virgin in the area.

We ae lucky if we 1/2 a meg most nights! does anyone know what this is? Can they explain this in layman terms! Does anyone know if this will help with long lines?

We have already had BT come and fit a "booster" on the line to remove noise on the line.

Should I just give up and move!

Hi There,

21CN is short for "21st Century Network" and is basically BT upgrading their core network, it doesn't immediately mean any changes for broadband provision in the UK as such.

WBC is short for "Wholesale Broadband Connect" and is a product from BT Wholesale that ISP's can "buy" to allow them to offer speeds up to 24Mbps rather than the standard 8Mbps. WBC is only available in a very few areas of the country at the moment and none of the suppliers we cover in our database actually use WBC as yet, though we have implemented the technology into our checker so as soon as they do offer it we can let people search for it.

If you post your postcode I can do some checks to see when your exchange is likely to be upgraded.

Like standard ADSL , WBC still slows as distance from the exchange increases.

Hope this helps explain

Please note that the BT Wholesale WBC products appear to be ADSL2+ based. ADSL2+ deals with long lines far WORSE than current IPStream products (3.5KMS vs 5.5KMS).

ADSL2 based products can operate at -90dB attenuation, this equates to over 7.5KMS.
I suggest you find an ISP that can provide an ADSL2 product in your area. Avoid ADSL2+.

we have the same issue and are also considering moving to solve, we are one of the last houses on our exchange - the other side of the street has a different area code. I am interested in the comment above about ADSL2 vs ADSL2+. We are in GU47 0XE and would love to have a solution. BT engineer told us 'just move, they'll never do anything to fix it'

According to BT Wholesale's database, houses at your postcode should be able to support:

Up to 0.5Mbps via ADSL
1Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max
1.5Mbps or greater via ADSL2+

So you would appear to be at a line length where your line speed is improved by using ADSL2+.

Im currently a ISP sales advisor what i would recommand with your 0.5mbp's is to go with the best ISP provider that offers lost cost broadband you are in a market 3 area this meens 4 or more providers in your area, If your just a genral user no point going for deals where u get great usages example 80 usage with talktalk , you want as a customer is the best service one which offers you priortised traffic you may pay more for this but you shouldnt get much interferance,

for full help on what market area your in check samknows if its market 1,2 your in a high market area you will pay more regardless what provider your with if your market 3 your in a low cost area so low costing broadband,

Tiscali customer feel sorry for you as bought by talk talk will be paying more money soon (look for new provider wink wink )
