Default BT Broadband is the worst isp IN THE WORLD

I have been having problems with my broadband connection for around a month now and despite making no less than 20 phone calls to BT i'm no closer to finding out whats wrong, whats being done to fix it or when it will be sorted out. I pay £24.99 a month for broadband and it cuts out at least 50 times a day and when it does work my conn speed is slower than my dial-up conn from over 10 years ago. Despite all this i still cannot manage to talk to a single BT employee who has the first idea whats going on. The fact that all BT employees DON'T speak english as a first language has only enraged me further because eben if they could help me i cant understand a single word they're sayin.

In short, anyone considering getting BT Broadband needs their head testing. not only is it one of the worst ISP's in britain but their customer care is so bad i beggers belief.

If i ever speak to a british employee of BRITISH TELECOM i will surely post and tell you all exactly what lies they try to sell me (assuming i dont die of shock the moment i speak to them)

BT does have BRITISH tech help, I seldom get anything but British call centres and even if it was an Indian call centre that gave help I would suggest their English would be better than yours judging from your command of the language

I love BT, as I am a fan of a poor connection at a premium price and want to talk to machines, paying 5 pounds if you dont trust them with direct debit(welll worth it) and dont want a customer rep, I want a poor recording of peter crouch's reassurance that they are great.
Please can everyone be on BT broadband,

YES BT ARE THE WORST EVER!!!!!

I hate BT with an absolute passion! They deploy throttling to mess with your downloads and want everybody to be like mr and mrs miggins doing a bit of casual browsing of an evening. I hate BT.

i dont think i have made it clear enough...DO NOT EVER GET A BT SERVICE!!! Even their new Infinity package uses the same traffic management software so they TELL YOU what you can use most or what you are aloud to use at the full speed of the network you pay for.

DO NOT EVER GO WITH BT! If you want to use P2P for example or online gaming you might be attracted to the 40mb speed. Dont be fooled. BT will slow this to less then dial up speed for anything that uses p2p technology (bittorrent, world of warcraft or many other applications) and if you are a gamer YOU WILL NOT GET HOST when playing on xbox live and will always drop out of lobbys due to BT slowing your connection.

So you didnt listen and you let the friendly English "sales" staff convince you to get bt broadband? now you realise the connection is pointless at 40mb when they throttle and traffic shape you all the time? so you call their tech support to get it resolved but you cant understand a word they are saying and they keep telling you that they dont traffic shape/nothing is wrong/everything is fine/have some more cool aid.

The bottom line is real simple. A 40mb connection with BTs traffic management is no better then dial up. You can get a decent upto 20meg service that is almost completely unrestricted (like O2...well most O2 connections are) or Zen. This upto 20meg service is far better then a throttled and restricted BT service. Bt throttled and restrict your service when you are in an 18 month contract, paying triple the price of alternatives and cant use it for what you need to. They do this so they dont have to upgrade their network fully and they can get away with doing the bare minimum as they always have done, this way they can cram more people onto their network. Also they do not like the idea of people having superior free alternative to their overpriced and lackluster BT vision.

BT are shocking, their customer support is negligible. I ditched them after they were takign payments for a rubbish BT vision service I'd never subscribed to...yep, never subscribed to. Their billing is a shambles.

Also in business they are a nightmare, I hotel I provide dev and support services too had their BT line slammed so basically the number changes and the broadband service stops. The owner set-up a new service with BT...it is getting 53K download speeds and they say they have to wait ten days 10 before doing anything, despite numerous promises no one calls back, even the account manager admitted and was embarrassed by the whole incident.

No one calls back, no one is bothered and internally it's a shambles, they kept insisting their was no broadband on the line, as I speak I'm reverting back to a 3G dongle, at least I'm getting 400k.

To the person who attacked the 1st poster, your an idiot, if your experience with BT has been good your one of the lucky few.

BT are a joke !

Whilst BT maybe the worst Isp i don think there is any need to call other people names or insult them on there command of English. We did not all have a first class education and that includes me.

Yes, please keep your criticisms aimed towards the broadband suppliers and refrain from making personal attacks on other contributors. We are all entitled to our opinions but please remember they are just that, your opinions. Your own experience may not reflect that of others.

For a more balanced view of how thousands of our visitors rated their experience of BT Broadband, you can look at the ratings and read the reviews on these pages:

They are not by any means the worst rated supplier we list.

July 2008

I was charged for repairs to the damaged overhead line to my property. I contested the charges as the line was damaged at bumper height were it was attached to the gable end wall of my property which is also a boundary wall of a communal carpark.I asked the engineer who came to repair the line if it could be re-directed to enter the property at 1st floor level so no further damage would be caused. He answered no I have a bad leg and can’t climb ladders.

I contacted Otelo who were very helpful and told me contact BT and have the account frozen. This took a big weight of my mind as BT had already instructed a Debt Collection Agency (DCA) to collect the charges.
I was out of contract with BT so moved to another supplier.

September 2009 after the Ombudsman had decided the charges were not payable by me and BT also losing its appeal I thought that was the end of the matter.

September 2009.I was contacted by the same DCA acting on behalf of BT demanding I settle the outstanding amount. This was made up of £18 I actually owed and the VAT of £47 from the charges the Ombudsman had decided I didn’t owe.
After several hours of wasted time on phone calls to BT and the DCA threatening additional legal and court costs and other commitments I had, I decided to settle up and reclaim it with the help of Otelo.

February 2010 BT finally admitted after I forwarded copies of my old BT bills to Otelo that they had miscalculated the outstanding charges and would write me an apology letter and contact the DCA to credit my account.

June 2010 after still not receiving either the apology letter or a credit to my account I contacted Otelo who contacted BT who were adamant my account had been credited in February and an apology letter dispatched.

July 2010 I forwarded copies of my bank statements to Otelo to show that BT were lying

September 2010 I finally received a cheque from BT for the outstanding amount.

Angry Re: BT Broadband is the worst isp IN THE WORLD

I moved from Sky when i cancelled my TV package, as it had been about 10 years since using BT i thought that they really must have got better in that time. MY MISTAKE!!!!!
I phoned in April 2010 (when it comes to sales its always English people you speak too!!) as the line was there he checked speed and said i would receive upto 1.5MBPS this is because my line is 5-7KM from exchange. We talked about different services and ended up taking line rental, evening and weekends and option 3 broadband.
First letter i received a week later stated that my BB would be 1MBPS so i had already lost 1/5MBPS and not yet even connected. So this was my first phone call to BT (Indian) had to phone back could not understand a word (so much for BT moving all there call centres back to UK). At this time nothinig was sorted as there was many line checks and it all came back saying 1MBPS was the fastest i was going to get.
In the start of June i received everything from BT and got the letter of activation date for the BB, so contected up on the next day after activation. When all installed and set up i worked with it for the next 10days as they say this will set your speed. After the 10 days i decided to do a speed check and to my supprise i wasn't even getting 512KBPS it was more around 370-400KBPS. So from my first phone call with BT i had lost over 1MBPS, well i can't say lost as i never had it but it was a hell of a difference from what they had told me i would get upto.
The next 3months was filled with phone calls and stress, finally got an engineer out to look at the connections. Nothing wrong in the house but outside there was a fault and in the green box down the road there was a fault. Once all fixed the engineer said give it a day or two so they can run tests on the line and get the speed levelled out. So i did and to my supprise i was now pushing the great speed of 512KBPS (whoop whoop!!) still a very big difference from what was actually given as my upto speed. this is also with BT magic boost box that you plug into your phone line.

For my 3 months of stress and phones calls they thought they were being kind by crediting me £75.00.
BT I WISH I HAD NEVER LEFT SKY.

But the stupid thing was when i was with Sky i had no problems no reason to call and they boosted my line so my broadband was coming into me at around 2-2.5MBPS which was excellent for the distance of my line.(and with a fault on too)

when i asked BT to do the same and boost my line in their own words "no service provider can boost your line you get the speed that is maximum for your line and that is what we are giving you"

I can't wait till my 12month contract is up as this will be the last time i will ever use BT they truly are the WORST in the UK at least.

Also since June 2010 still to present i have no end of line drops(thats not what the advert says) even my hub has reset its self 4 times (password, WPA key and settings)

What i am trying to say is that BT are **** but there is also alot out there that are just as bad for instance Talk Talk - wouldn't touch them with a barge pole constant lies to keep you with them! keep telling you about charges if you try and leave them even if outside contract.

All broadband providers have guppy call centres you're not going to get away from this. Everbody everywhere will have an issues with even the best service providers. But i will be going back to Sky once my contract is up.

You have my sympathy. The answer is simple if you are not locked into a contract, switch supplier. If you want fantastic customer service, great speeds (I have the fastest in my street at around 10Mbs) use the Which? magazine's Best Buy telephone and broadband bundle. Check it out at https://www.utilitywarehouse.co.uk/home/internet/
