hello, I am thinking about getting broadband in my home with AOL but I have heard mixed reports about them. Can anyone tell me whether or not they would recommend them, and their experiences with AOL?

Thanks.

AOL generally don't get too bad a press, but they are aimed at the family and new user end of the broadband market where the users aren't too demanding. If you were after the fastest broadband or the best for gaming etc, then you might want to look elsewhere, but if you just want a solid provider theres not a huge amount to slate them on. They are the masters of the freebie though (free laptops, playstations etc)

Avoid AOL if you can.

They are the 'cheap and cheerful (or not)' end of the market.

They have their own networks and protocols which don't always interact properly with everyone else.

Two things to consider:

Very few people in the IT industry use AOL
Why do they have to give away a laptop (or other freebies) to get you to sign up?

I am an IT contractor and have used a number of suppliers. My experience so far is that if you want a stable, reliable, fast service then BT (yeh I know) is one of the best. I know their admin is terrible and there are issues about delayed installation dates etc. but once the service is running it is solid.

Just remember that it is them who run the cables to your house, so guess who is going to get the priority service on it.

Hi, I am looking for a reliable ISP that can provide fast and stable download speed in order to support some online gaming. I am willing to pay above the odds if it means that i can game without the lag and constant loss of connection i current get with BT. Anyone recommend a good ISP for gamers???

Hi There

There are a couple of ISP's you want to look for when it comes to gaming.

Plusnet have a special gamers broadband package.

O2 Broadband if they are available in your area have a pretty good reputation for gaming.

I hope this helps

Arrow Re: Welcome to Which residential broadband supplier?

I would avoid AOL like the plague. Strangely enough I have been with them since the dial-up days. Their support is difficult and based in India, It can take some very long phonecalls, mainly listening to music, to resolve an issue and now I am thinking of changing broadband supplier. To cap it all I have sent 3 e-mails, over a 3 week period, asking for my contract expiry date. No reply so far. There you go.
I am thinking of going with O2. Can anybody talk me out of it?

Don't bother with Tiscali. I ordered it on the 4th December 2008. I am still waiting...They do ring me now and again though to arrange a new delivery date
