Default BT Infinity roll-out ... which areas ?

Hi

I've only just read about BT Infinity.

Does it give hope to those of us in provincial cities for proper high speed broadband ?

I live at the edge of Leicester and currently get 2-3 MB download speed (O2, LLU). Is there any info about whether BT are going to install fibreoptics across the country ?

thanks

Hi swayzak,

We've published a guide to BT Infinity that lists the areas currently planned to be upgraded to the new system:

Infinity Broadband - Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC)

I hope that helps.

So the Tamworth exchange is going to be enabled in the Autumn this year. My area code is 01827 (tamworth) so will I get it, or is it only going to for Tamworth itself? My rural exchange (Twycross) is a sub-exchange of Tamworth. many thanks for any info, as I'm fed up with 1.5Mb!!

Unhappy Re: BT Infinity roll-out ... which areas ?

So as far as I understand it Generic Ethernet Access Fibre to the Cabinet (GEA-FTTC) is being enabled in a number of exchanges. Mine (Brentwood) was supposed to be done Jan 2010 but I also see a date Q2 2010. My confusion is has Brentwood been enabled? or will it be in Q2 this year? What about getting the Fibre connected to the cabinet, is that a separate issue? Does it mean they'll say Yes Brentwood has FTTC when in fact only the exchange has been enabled? So it'll be just like the initial roll out of BB and we still won't get a decent speed for years yet until they install the actual fibre?

My speed max 576kbs but today 384Kbs - my dream is to download an iPlayer program and watch it same day!

Last few months I have seen BT Openreach vans digging at the end of our road in Tamworth which would suggest fibre optic cable, yet both BT n SKY say I can only get a max of 2 meg which is 'kin annoying.

The Tamworth exchange is scheduled to be upgraded to BT Fibre to the Cabinet in September 2010.

The broadband.co.uk checker is now FttC enabled and should give you FttC speeds and BT Infinity deals if both your exchange and street cabinet are FttC enabled:

Compare Broadband In Your Area

You can also try signing up for a BT Infinity deal to get BT's own estimate of your speeds and when your line will be FttC enabled:

BT Total Broadband BT Infinity Broadband and Calls

Hope this helps.

Dear Admin,

I live in Maidenhead in Berkshire and my exchange has FTTC for some areas. I am not yet covered although I live in a central part of the town. How can I find out when my area will be covered?

Thanks

It seems the wholesale availability database only lists activation dates for exchanges, not street cabinets. Your best bet is probably talking to BT Infinity sales to see if they have more information.

It used to be the case that the form on the BT Infinity site would offer to email you when Infinity would become available in your area, but it looks like it's now prompting sign up to 'Race For Infinity' on my test numbers. This might be worth a try for you as your exchange already has FttC and so would not be eligible.

I hope this helps.

I'm biased, but are you in a Virgin Media cable area? If so you will be able to get 50Mb now. The upspeed will be 5Mb universally before 2012. Also they are rolling out 100Mb/10Mb from 7th. December 2010.

Question Re: BT Infinity roll-out ... which areas ?

Hi,
Can anyone please answer my question which BT and my current provider won't?
We are supposed to be activated for BT Infinity FTTC by 31 Dec.
I am currently with another provider on a 8MB deal but get 2MB if I am very lucky.
Will the FTTC improve this to the 8MB I should be getting or will I have to change to BT to see any benefit at all?
Thanks
