usage limit

I've just subscribed to BT broadband and am an aged non-techie type.
Is there any way to keep track of how many GBs I'm using so that I dont get any nasty surprises at the end of the month?

And....are there any disadvantages to signing up to the FON thing - that sounds too good to be true
