Hello
We have decided to trial BT business broadband so that we can start doing dual wan switching to allow us to host more customers websites and mail cheaply. (we use adsl, then if they become popular we switch them to our colocated servers with a lot more bandwidth) We had a new line install specifically for the broadband (well same physical line different wires), we have also waited the 10 days training period for the line. A couple of speed tests show us that the line is next to useless for our needs. We have trialed several speed test sites and the results are roughly the same.... Tested using the same computer and targeting the same area, only difference is the routers -- 13th Feb 15:00 3052 down 591 up -- pipex 121 ms ping 1947 down 204 up -- bt 183 ms ping 10:00 2763 down 693 up -- pipex 81ms 1934 down 199 up -- bt 146 ms ---------------------------------- 14th Feb 09:53 2771 down 684 up -- pipex 98 ms 1947 down 186 up -- bt 288 ms We are not overly fussed about download speed (although there is a fairly big difference), what is important to us as a company is upload speed which BT is very poor at. Our questions are; * Why is the BT line so poor in comparison to Pipex one ? * Could the new line be at fault ? from the office to the pole its on the same physical line... * What are our options for getting out if need be ? We are meant to be having a BT engineer visit us later today to run tests but I'll not hold my breath after reading some of the threads on this site. Regards Craig B |

some more speedtest stats
19:27 3284 down 444 up -- pipex 122 ms 1968 down 206 up -- bt 206 ms ------------------------------------ 15th Feb 11:05 3264 down 690 up -- pipex 98 ms 1927 down 370 up -- bt 84 ms The voip tests are even worse, we spend a lot of time in skype meetings with clients, the BT line has a high jitter rating and doesn't handle the calls very well. and surprise surprise no BT engineer.... not impressed Not very business class broadband in my opinion Regards Craig B |

YOU WOULD NEED A PIPE OR SDSL TO GET UPLOAD SPEEDS REQUIRED. A leased line would be the best option but very expensive. Or you could always re-locate to a third world country that has broadband speeds in excess of 50 meg (like most of the world) and leave GB as we are falling behind in almost every service it would seem. Just think - it was a Brit that invented the internet!
