Default BT Line Question?

Hi all

I am a new member on this forum and would appreciate some advice please!

I was with BT (broadband/vision/phone) until a few months ago, but unfortunately I was payed off from my job during this time! So I missed a payment with BT as there was no way on earth I could have payed the bill at that time!

So I called them not expecting much in terms of flexibility with payment options, but too my suprise the nice lady said if you pay the bill in two weeks I would not have my service cut, which was great, Ha what a joke next day my phone was on incoming calls only then a week later my broadband was gone too!

By the time the two weeks had come the bill was now triple what I was due before? So after phoning again and getting no where I got fed up with it and heard nothing from them until about 4-5 weeks later I got a massive bill like £500? So its been a few months now and I am back in employment and now have consolidated the debts into a single payment I accrued being unemployed!

Initially when I signed up too BT I paid £130.00 to have a new line put in!

So my question is can I sign up with Talk Talk or something now on the line? ( If I plug a phone into the line I get the dialing tone and if I do a line test I get a number quoted back but it is not the original telephone number I was given by BT) Talk Talk are on my towns Internet exchange so will they reconnect the line?

Sorry about the life story, but would appreciate any advice, its quite embarrasing when you have lost your job and your family tries to call you and cant get through because BT didnt keep there word!

Anyway thanks in advance!
