Do not bother with this shower. Signed up to move from BT due to issues with BT. Lord knows why I bothered as BT are far superior based to this shower. SSE told BT my move was scheduled for the 20th March which BT actioned. However Shambolic Service Extrodinaire managed not to tell BT that there were problems - result = no broadband for me. Have wasted at least two hours of my valuable lifespan trying to resolve the issue. SSE not really interested and still cannot give me a date as to when the transfer will be completed. Looking at going cap in hand to BT to go back to them. Suppose the old adage is you get what you pay for, and with SSE you get poor service where they blame the other party until its proven its SSE's fault. Ofcom here I come. They offered £30 to buy a mobile dongle, great if you live in an area where mobile signal is ok - guess what, I do not. When I told them that no other offer made.

I am still waiting to get a broadband service set up after 3 weeks and have just been told that it will be another week before the account come online. I have been passed through 5 separate "advisors". However I was not told of the time scale involved at any point - I have had the router for four days now and cannot use it for another week - appalling amounts of red tape and no consistency between call handlers. Not worth the hassle.

I was with sse fibre broadband for a couple of weeks when the problems began, I had 2 main problems 1: complete loss of broadband, 2:Speed dropping to less than 512kbps,this happened many times over a 6 month period, when I complained they kept going through the same rigmarole, I told them many times that I had done the test required by them, each time, and knew what to do, as I am a qualified computer engineer. They wouldn't send a engineer out,and the problem remained. Even after contacting the ombudsman and providing evidence of the problems, nothing was done. Oddly enough ,6 months after the initial complaint, when I told Sse that I had complained to the ombudsman the speed improved, I got a regular speed of 38.6 mbps until september, when the ombudsman failed me and I pulled out of the contract. I was informed by a close friend, who us an ex-fibre broadband engineer that it is BT openreach's fault as they are known to reduce speeds purposely, to encourage you to either upgrade or to move over to B.T. Its a huge con and nobody does anything about it because B.T are in control.

started great! fast speeds good customer service BUT then the speed slowed for 2 weeks before broadband stopped altogether they want to do everything over the phone so I spent 2weeks recording speeds morning and night that showed no problem their end and spent hours on hold before listening to someone that needs to ask a colleague every question (which comes off a script) The equipment is clearly faulty but they wont replace it. I've now given up and switched providers. SSE are useless their "technicians" haven't got a clue I will never recommend or use again

Being technically "challenged" I really wasn't looking forward to trying to set this up , and expected I would have to get somebody to do it for me . The pack arrived well in advance of the switch over date (13th) I read all of the instructions ,and looked at the diagrams . British Telecom cut us off pretty promptly , and the SSE service was there immediately , phone working fine , when I plugged in the broadband connections they all worked fine too , amazingly !! Put the new codes into laptops , kindle etc and we were all set up by 10.00 am , fantastic service .The speed seems faster than we originally had and its £30.00 a month cheaper than our original provider .It's only day 2 but so far it's still working perfectly . Would just like to say that if I can do it anybody can , as I'm useless with anything technical .We were kept informed of the change over date by SSE , and the pack was self explanatory , very easy to set up the change over and the equipment .

UK SSE
So I joined SSE 15 months ago on a 24 month half price fibre deal with 80mbps fibre. I had a bad few months with very slow download speeds of 0.2mbps after 4 each day till midnight.

I labor d with it for a year until I found out I could get off the contract after 12 months for 30 quid. I paid the money because daisy heavily speed limits certain traffic at peak times rendering the internet unusuable. Facebook videos don't work. Direct downloads e.g pz4 updates don't work. Anything other than web sites and Amazon prime works. I'm leaving tomorrow thankfully. Good riddance.

SSE Buyers Guide

Can I get SSE?

SSE are a relative newcomer to the broadband and phone market but are well established in the energy sector, trading in Scotland as Scottish Hydro, South England as Southern Electric, Wales as SWALEC and Northern England as SSE.

Despite only selling energy services in particular regions, SSE broadband is available wherever there's a BT telephone exchange. They offer the same prices regardless of where you live.

In some areas SSE may make savings by using their own equipment installed in the BT telephone exchange, but these savings are shared with all customers. The same standard broadband prices and features are available wherever you live. Fibre to the cabinet services are also available, to get these both your exchange and street cabinet must have been upgraded to support fibre.

You can find out which SSE Broadband products are available where you live with our postcode checker.

What packages are available?

SSE offer standard ADSL and Fibre broadband packages:

  • SSE Everyday Broadband + Talk Weekend - up to 17Mb speeds with unlimited usage and weekend calls to UK landlines◊
  • SSE Superfast Fibre + Talk Weekend - up to 38Mb speeds with unlimited usage and weekend calls to UK landlines◊
  • SSE Ultrafast Fibre + Talk Weekend - up to 76Mb speeds with unlimited usage and weekend calls to UK landlines◊

The speed available to you will vary based on various factors including the time of day (speeds are likely to be slower at peak times like evenings when lots of people are online), the wiring in your home, and the distance from your nearest BT telephone exchange or cabinet, with speeds decreasing the further away you are. You can find out how close you are to your nearest exchange by using our postcode checker.

If you want to stick with your current phone supplier, SSE offer packages without line rental at an extra cost of £10 and additional upfront connection charges. Give them a call to sign up for this service.

Which package should I choose?

If you're interested in a budget provider like SSE, it's likely that cost effectiveness and value for money are important factors to you.

SSE packages cover a range of needs for the budget user, and all packages come with free connection. Ultimately your choice will be based on how much you make use of your landline, how big an allowance you need, and if you think a superfast fibre connection is something you would benefit from.

If you're a frequent downloader, rely on Cloud storage or make heavy use of HD video streaming services like iPlayer, Netflix or NOW TV, or you need to make a lot of calls during the week, then the Everyday Broadband option may be a better choice.

For those looking for higher speed fibre packages, the Superfast Fibre package offers unlimited broadband at fibre speeds. Be sure to get a speed estimate before you sign up, if your predicted speed isn't much higher than Everyday broadband, it may not be worth the extra cost.

Points to consider before you choose

  • Is low price the most important factor for you?
  • How often do you use your landline to make calls and at what times of day?
  • Are you a heavy user of streaming video or a heavy downloader?
  • Do you need the higher speeds offered by a fibre connection and is your exchange and street cabinet set up to support this?

What do I get when I sign-up?

It's always good to know upfront what you'll get when signing up with an ISP so you know what you can enjoy for free, or to budget for any extras you may want.

  • Inclusive wireless router - SSE Broadband customers receive a free, easy to set up, N-rated wireless router when they sign up to help manage their connection.
  • SSE Security Suite† - The SSE Internet Security Suite includes antivirus, firewall and parental controls, free during the 18 months of your contract, then an extra £2 per month. Users must download the application to receive these benefits, the subscription may be cancelled at any time.
  • Free connection - SSE offer free installations on all their broadband and phone packages#, saving on some of the ‘hidden costs’ that ISPs can surprise you with.

What are the benefits of SSE?

The benefits offered by an ISP may be what seals the deal in your decision to buy a package from them.

  • Cheap costs - One of SSE’s main selling points is the low cost of their packages, making them one of the cheaper providers on the market, offering broadband at budget rates.
  • Low cost line rental - On the Simple Broadband package with weekend UK landline calling, SSE offer line rental for only £13.49 per month, beating other provider's monthly landline cost and even most upfront line rental saver monthly equivalent costs.
  • Free UK-based technical support - SSE’s customer support is based in the UK and provided online or via a free 0800 number, meaning that you don’t have to pay to be on hold if things go wrong.
  • 20 countries included in Anytime callsºº - The £5 Anytime calls option comes with inclusive calls to landlines in 20 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA.

What are the drawbacks of SSE?

Let's face it, not everything can be perfect, and even the best deals may have a downside.

  • No short contracts - Unlike some broadband providers, SSE do not offer shorter 1 month or even 12 month contracts. Their deals come with 18 month contracts, which can be an issue for those who do not want such a long-term commitment and need greater flexibility, such as those on short tenancies or students. However, SSE are at least available at all broadband-enabled BT exchanges, so you will usually be able to take your contract with you when you move home.
  • Few extras - SSE currently only offer a free router and Internet security software with their broadband packages, and lack extra incentives in comparison to many other providers. However, this more 'no frills' approach means they are able to concentrate more on the provision of your broadband and phone services.
  • Limited information - There's very little detailed information on the SSE website about telephone support opening hours and the typical ADSL headline speeds. We would usually recommend that customers research these before signing up to a provider, though SSE should provide you with information about what speeds your line can support during the sign-up process.
  • Newer provider - As SSE are relatively new to the broadband market, there's yet to be a large number of customer reviews and ratings, this could make it harder to compare them to other providers.

Δ The estimate of your download speed is a guideline of what you're likely to experience using the broadband service. Your actual speed may vary due to other factors, such as your home environment, the weather or network capacity.

# 1.Free connection is available to new broadband customers purchasing a fixed term talk and broadband bundle. 2.Customers buying stand-alone broadband will be subject to a connection charge which will be applied to their first bill. 3.Subject to availability. SSE have the right to withdraw this offer at any time.

† Internet security suite includes antivirus, firewall and parental controls to restrict internet access to minors. Customers have to pro-actively download the application to benefit from these features. Subscription can be cancelled any time by contacting SSE's customer service line. After the 18 month initial term, the subscription price is £2 per month.

◊ Inclusive Talk calls are for (i) local and national numbers beginning 01, 02 and 03 and (ii) 0845 & 0870 numbers. Excludes indirect access numbers and dial-up internet access. Inclusive calls are free up to 70 minutes. Any call duration over 70 minutes will be charged. Redial before 70 minutes to avoid charges. Fair use policy applies - maximum 1,000 minutes or 150 calls a month; whichever you reach first. If either of these limits is exceeded SSE will charge for these calls at the equivalent rate for non-inclusive periods. Daytime calls mean from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday; Evening calls before 7am and after 7pm Monday to Friday; Weekend calls midnight Friday to midnight Sunday. For more information about call charges, see the Call Charges and Tariff Information PDF available from SSE product pages.
